I would be pleased to hear if anyone is aware of hiring fair records in the Thatcham area. There is the suggestion that some ancestors name HORNBLOW came from the Thatcham area and moved to Wiltshire. Hiring Fair records might show how and why this happened. Thanks, Toby.

Hello, It is very unlikely that you will find Hiring Fair records, other than the dates they were held. They were very informal affairs and bargains (ie new hirings) were sealed by a verbal agreement and a handshake. Regards Vicwinann

Sellwood Berkshire Oxon Lancs Wilts; Cassell Berkshire and Guildford; Leighs Guildford and London; Saunders Portsea, Greenwich and Deptford ; Austin Cookham; Osgood Berkshire; Dack Norfolk; Darling Berkshire and Mapledurham; Wilkins Englefield Berks; Havenhand Derbys; Whileman Derbys; Reedman Derbys, Notts, Australia, Africa; Rottenberry Deptford and Devon;
There are records for a couple of Wiltshire fairs (Wootton Bassett for one) but I have not come across any survivals in Berkshire.
As your chap ended up working in Wilts it is more likely that he was hired there than in Thatcham - though he may, of course, moved there through a series of jobs that started with a hiring in Thatcham or Newbury.

Currently researching: HEADs in west Berkshire (the Peasemore/Leckhampstead line). Newbury almshouses & many other aspects of the history of the area.
Hi Vicwinann & Newburychap, Thanks for your contributions.I know about the Wootton Bassett records having found some individuals from another branch. That success prompted me to wonder about Thatcham. It is always difficult, I find, to link individuals unless the distance is about 5 miles maximum. Thatcham to Broad Blunsdon is a lot more than that. Toby.
