Jewish community in Nottingham early 19th Century?
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 17:28 GMT (UK) »

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone was aware of a Jewish community living in Nottingham around 1800? There may be some Jewish ancestry in my family tree-does anyone know if it was common for people of Jewish faith to convert to Christianity,as one record is in a church?
Thanks.

Hi Burto,
Apparently St.Nicholas Street, in Nottingham, used to be called Jew Lane - probably because several of Nottingham's jewish community lived there.
This street connected Hounds Gate with Castle Gate.
(Old Nottingham - It's Streets and People - published 1902 + 1904).
!6969 ecclesiastical returns show small Jewish congregation living in Nottingham.

Hi again Burto,
Just found some more information:
The medieval town:
Nottm was one of seventeen towns in England where Jews could reside. The community lived primarily in and around Jew Lane on the southern edge of the town within reach of the castle (for security), near the synagogue, which was in Lister Gate, south of a substantial Jewish property on the corner of Castle Gate.......Local Jews were primarily money-lenders, an activity which presupposes mutual trust between Christians and Jews, in contrast to neighbouring towns........ In Notttingham there is no evidence of friction........
I know it's not the period you're asking about, but I thought you might still find it interesting.
Kind regards,
Paulene.
