Sunderland Marriage Details Please
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 20:01 GMT (UK) »

Hello there!

Could anyone with access to the Sunderland registers please give me the full entries for the following marriages:

GEORGE HICKIN to MARY JONES 09 JUN 1807

ROBERT DENTON to MARY JONES 23 DEC 1811

I'm trying to find the name of Mary's father.

Many thanks in advance

Under Hardwicke's Marriage Act 1753, the information recorded in the register are the names of the bride and groom, the date and place, whether the marriage was by banns or licence, the consent of the parents if either of the couple were under the age of 21, the marital status of the bride and groom, and the names of witnesses. The parents names are not given.

In Durham aned Northumberland from 1798 to 1812 full details of the bride and groom were meant to be recorded by a local ruling from the Bishop of Durham.  The brides father's name during that period is a not uncommon piece of information, as were their parishes of origin.

It was Bishop Shute Barrington who was the bishop of Durham and Northumberland who asked that all parish registers in Northumberland and Durham be kept in great detail.  but that only really affected baptism registers, and to a lesser extent, burial ones. It did not affect the preprinted marriage registers, which were governed by the1753 Hardwick Act , which even a Bishop - even the Bishop of Durham - could not alter.

See how you go with this Ashley:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp=1204024901500

You have to register first.

- Click on [SEARCH] which will take you to another page
- Scroll to the bottom of that page and in the right hand column, fifth from the bottom, is England Diocese of Durham Bishop's Transcripts
- Click on this which will take you to another page where you can then select Durham and then Sunderland.

It's a lengthy process to trawl through the pages, but I hope you find what you're looking for. I've had a few problems with the screen being blank and no image showing, but it seems OK when I return later (glitch?).

Also, have no idea how the pages are organized, and can't seem to find some of mine (missing records? pages? bad eyesight? page damaged/dark faded etc?.... ).

Good luck and have fun!

I think that you will find it is not the easiest database to use  Smiley Sunderland 1769-1842 has 1,412 pages, with no index, and there are a batch of transcripts for Wallsend parish among them. The Wallsend images run from number 119 to number 695 in Sunderland 1769-1842. They start with Baptisms 1813 and end with Burials 1823. I have not looked at the intervening pages so they may not be continuous.
They are Bishop's Transcripts they will have no more information than what was in the parish register.

All the transcripts show is the name of the groom and bride and the date, with no other information.
After Rose's Act of 1812 they appear to be a copy of the register, which, as I pointed out do not have the names of the parents

You are completely correct Stan - it is very difficult to use and there is no further information to be discovered. I can't find Ashley's marriage in there with "stuff everywhere".

However I have managed to find a couple of my ancestors, but with many unable to be found, although I have not yet explored the thousands of pages  Grin. I am still new to the site though and haven't quite got the gist of it.

Ashley may still find it interesting and perhaps useful for other ancestors if not these.

Many thanks everyone for your innput and help.  I rather hoped the originals might have more information than the BTs.

Even if you can find the Banns or by Licence  certificates you will not get the parents names unfortunately the only way is by trawling though the records via BT's or going to the DRO -but still having to trawl the records.

The only way to find parents names is by looking for birth records, and that is by looking the same way, unfortunately.
