I was a cheeky little devil....

Hi,
I have a Robert Sharpe (b. about 1825, Dronfield) married to a Caroline ? (b. about 1825, Unstone near Dronfield). They have a daughter Jane (b. 1846, Dronfield - (Chesterfield, 2Q 19/563)). They are well defined in the 1851, 1861 and 1881 censuses at least, but I just can't find a reasonable marriage for these two.
A search of Free BMD reveals only one possible Robert Sharpe / Caroline Wind marriage, but that's in Taunton at the same time (2Q 1846) as the birth of Jane - seems unlikely!
They would be too young to be married prior to 1837, when registrations started.
I've searched both Sharp and Sharpe, with and without Robert and Caroline and also IGI but I can't see a feasible marriage.
Perhaps someone can find a possible Caroline ? in the 1841 census for Unstone.
Robert's parents were William Sharpe and Sarah ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated ...

On Free BMD
There is a marriage of a Caroline ROPER 1844 June qtr., Chesterfield, vol. 19 page 395.
There is also a marriage of a Robert SHARP 1844 June qtr., Coventry, vol 19, page 395. Against this second entry is a note to the effect that the page range indicates the district should be Chesterfield not Coventry. If this is the case the mistake is in the GRO Index itself, the image shows this is a typed index so this is quite possible, the original would have been transcribed more than once.
You can either take a gamble and order the marriage certificate for Caroline ROPER, or the birth certificate of one of the children, this will give you Caroline's maiden name.
I can see birth references for Jane and Sarah, but not for the eldest Ann, whose age indicates she may have been born before their marriage. There is a reference for Mary Ann ROPER in Chesterfield in 1843 who may or may not be her.
At least this give you something to consider.

Willow154 - what a wonderful site! I have only scratched the surface, so much interesting information. I found a link to http://www.ashover.org/ which has some information on my Bradley ancestors.
Jebber and Cas - great investigative work - many thanks!
I saw the Robert Sharp (Coventry) entry, but dismissed it without investigating further, foolish me, one extra "click" would have solved the problem!
I'm sure I checked Caroline marriages, not sure how I missed Caroline Roper (Chesterfield) ...
With all that extra census information, I now have the Sharpe and Roper families very well defined.
Thanks again, to all concerned ...

It would be worth getting the marriage cert for Robert & Caroline to confirm you have the correct info. Although I have a feeling it is correct. well done Jebber for the lead....

On a side note ...
I have discovered the marriage of George Roper to Hannah Habberjam in 1805 in Dronfield.
I have never come across the Habberjam surname before, and I found this interesting information:
This rare and interesting name is of French origin, and derives from 'haubergeon'. The term was probably introduced into England at the Norman Conquest of 1066. In its various and colourful spellings it is a metonymic occupational name for a maker of 'habergeons', which were sleeveless jackets of mail or scale armour, worn also as a rough garment whilst making a penance. Whilst the original French is basically retained in the spellings of Habershon, Habbershon, Habberjam, Habbijam, and Habergham, it is also wholly anglicized in the spelling as Habgood, in fact it almost defies logic. The surname, not surprisingly was originally strongly associated with the steel city of Sheffield, Gilberto Haberiambe being recorded at St Peters Church, Sheffield on April 4th 1585, whilst later examples include William Habershon at Sheffield Cathedral on July 4th 1777, and Matthew Habershon, (1789 - 1852) who was the architect of the Anglican Cathedral in Jerusalem. This surname is sometimes confused with Habbeshaw, which has a similar French origin, being a maker of hauberks. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Matthew de Habercham, which was dated 1269, in the Lancashire Inquisitions, during the reign of King Henry 111, known as 'The Frenchman', 1216-1272.
Thanks all ...
