Looking for information about Mark Pollard son of Thomas Pollard and Emma Maxwell from Truro, Cornwall. In 1859 he married Sophia Clemow in Fitzroy, Australia. Worked as a gold miner in Fryestown. Then in 1871 he married Emily Jane Wilson nee Hicks daughter of James Hicks and Jane Matthews from Redruth, Cornwall. They had ten children, some stayed in Victoria others moved over to Western Australia. Do not know anything about the family in Cornwall or the family that stated in Victoria. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi pacificwa,
Welcome to Cornwall
I suspect a mistake has been made in Oz re Emma's name
Thomas POLLARD = Emma MANUELL 7 May 1835 Kenwyn
Makes the 1851 census interesting for sure
Cornwall Census is available free online
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144624.0.html
You will note the lodgers Matthias and Elizabeth MANUELL in the household so it seems Manuell is likely her name. See the entry at COCP where you can get a good look at who is about the parish who may also be of interest Very Handy
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kayhin/51910h.html
I see Matthias in 1841 (Manuel with one L) but alas no parents present. There are quite a few Manuells in the parish of Kenwyn.
You will often find the name Manuell transcribed as Mannell or Mansell so be on the watchout for it. On the IGI There is an Emma Mannell 1815 to Matthew and Joanna. Baptisms to this couple under Mannell and Manuel and Mansell including an Elija and a Matthias. Seems good as there is one to fit with Matthias in 1841
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
If you use Batch Number C022951 and just type in parents Matthew and Joanna (don't worry about the surname with the batch number) and you will see them all under the different variants
Matthew MANNELL = Joanna LAWRY 27 Jun 1811 Kenwyn
I did also notice an older Mark Pollard in the parish. In case he is of interest
Mark POLLARD of Kea = Jane JULEFF 31 Dec 1803 Kenwyn
Cheers Kris

Thank you very much everyone for all the information. I beleive Chris has Emma's surname correct. On a typed copy of Mark's marriage certificate his mother's name is written as Emma Man (ual), we all thought this was a mistake. Now we know dfferently. I will check all the web sites you have included in your information. I really do not know anything about Cornwall, especially this era.
Thanks again
Kaye

G'day, Can I be so rude as to jump in here. I have GGG Grand parents being Robert Mannell (B 1767, St. Columb Major, Cornwall) and Ualilia Lawry (B 1770 also in St. Columb Major, Cornwall) and have found a marriage of the mentioned Matthew and Joanna Lawry.
Is anyone able to give me any further info on these two couples as it would appear to be that they would have been cousins marrying cousins.
Thanking you

Hi Kaye,
I have information on the Pollard's if you are interested
I believe that your Thomas Pollard is the son of Mark Pollard as below:
Mark Pollard of Kea, and Jane Juleff m. 31 Dec 1803 Kenwyn, Cornwall
children: Mark Pollard b. 1803 chr: 30 Sept 1804 Kenwyn, Cornwall Mary Pollard b. 14 Mar 1805 chr: 6 Apr 1806 Truro Cornwall Jenefer Pollard b. 1808 chr: 7 May 1809 Kenwyn, Cornwall William Pollard b. 1809 chr: 2 Sept 1810 Kenwyn, Cornwall Thomas Pollard b. 1811 chr: 4 July 1812 Kenwyn, Cornwall Mary Pollard chr: 20 Nov 1814 Kenwyn, Cornwall Johanna Pollard b. 22 Oct 1816 chr: 28 Mar 1837 St Marys Wesleyan Truro, Cornwall (mother Jane Juleph) Benjamin Pollard chr: 9 Jun 1821 Kenwyn, Cornwall Benjamin Pollard b. 6 mar 1823 chr: 19 Mar 1837 St Marys Wesleyan Truro, Cornwall (mother Jane Juleff)
The names and dates seem to fit well, Mark Pollard (the elder) was the son of Thomas Pollard and Cordelia Hicks. Mark Pollard was baptised on 12 July 1783 at Kenwyn and is buried at Chacewater, Kenwyn. He died in 1861.
I also descend from this Pollard family, my ancestor is Mark Pollard's elder brother George Pollard who married Mary Roberts.
Please let me know if you would like more info as I have collected together a bit on this family

I would be very interested in any information that you have on the Pollard family. It would be great to connect this Thomas Pollard to the one who married Emma Manuell. I have only found a small amount of information on this family. Their son Mark Pollard was born in 1836/37, he immigrated to Australia in 1857.
Thanks for your input. Kaye

Hi Kaye,
I think your stoke of luck is the name "Mark" as there really are very few in Cornwall at that time.
The only ones I can find in the Kenwyn/Truro area are:
Mark Pollard (bap 12 July 1783 Kenwyn - to Thomas Pollard & Cordelia Hicks) Mark Pollard (bap 30 Sept 1804 Kenwyn - to Mark Pollard and Jane Juleff - a brother to Thomas) Mark Pollard (bap 19 Mar 1837 Chacewater, Kenwyn - to Thomas Pollard and Emma)
Thomas & Emma Pollard in the baptism are recorded as living at Penstraze, and Thomas is a miner.
I have Mark Pollard (senior's) census records as below:
1841 census - Penstrace, Kenwyn, Cornwall (Folio 41 page 10)
Mark Pollard 58yrs Miner Copper In county, Benjamin Pollard 15yrs Tailor Apprentice In county,
1851 census - Penstrazes, Kenwyn
Mark Pollard Head M M 67yrs Cornwall - Kea Jane Pollard Wife M F 72yrs Cornwall - Kenwyn Benjamen Pollard Son U M 28yrs Tailor Cornwall - Kenwyn
1861 census - Chacewater
Benjn Pollard Head M 38yrs Tailor Employing 4 Girls b. Kenwyn Cornwall Johanna Pollard Wife M 37yrs b. Kea Cornwall Joseph Pollard Son 11mths b. Kenwyn Cornwall Mark Pollard Father W 77yrs Formerly Miner b. Kenwyn Cornwall (Mistranscribed as Marst)
So the family are from the Penstraze/Chacewater area, which fits in with the young Mark's baptism well. Incidently a second child was baptised the same day as Mark (19 March 1837) to Thomas and Emma and that was Mary (she shows up in the census returns a year older than Mark). Looks like they had a few done at once
I believe the name Mark was passed down through the Hicks family, as Cordelia Hicks was baptised 31 May 1750 at Kenwyn to Mark Hicks and Cordelia Gilbert. Gotta love it when a rare name is passed down!
What do you think? I am thinking that it fits in very nicely...
Jenny

Hey Kaye,
Also had a look at the marriage for Thomas and Emma
It shows as: Thomas Pollard Emma Mannah 7 May 1835 Kenwyn Witnesses: T G Hicks Margaret Courtice
These same witness names (Hicks/Courtice) show up on several Pollard marriages, namely:
Mark Pollard and Alice Bawden in 1833 (who I believe to be Thomas' brother) William Pollard and Elizabeth Oats in 1836 (who I believe to be Thomas' brother)
An quite a few known cousins...
More grist to the mill
