Hi, Everyone, Will not be popping up to the CCRO for a while now, and I was wondering in the meantime whether anyone has any info on the BRAYSHER family, who may have been in Foxton, just south of Cambridge, in the 18thC - or even before or after that. It's just that I've finally spotted Susannah JOHNSON (who was Susannah BRAYSHER when she married John JOHNSON at Holy Trinity, Cambridge in 1797) in the 1851 Census at 4, New Square; she'd retired from running her JOHNSON's, tailors and clothiers at 51, Sidney St and two of her sons had taken over the running of the business. Her birthplace is given as Foxton, and her age as 79, so if accurate that gives her a birthdate of 1771/2. The BRAYSHER name seems quite rare on the IGI, but I wonder whether anyone might have come across them anywhere in this part of Cambs... Many thanks, keith

Hi Keith. I've looked through Foxton parish registers and found William Brayzor marr Hannah Gray 24 Nov 1762 Wits Thomas Wheston and Thom Godfrey they had the following children William Brazior bap 3 Nov 1765 bur 14 May 1770 Martha Brayser bap 14 May 1769 Susannah Braisor bap 1 Mar 1772
Hannah does appear as Susannah in the registers a couple of times instead of Hannah. I found these burials Sherman Brazier bur 28 Sept 1777 4th son of William and Susannah (bt Hannah) Ann inf dau of William and Hannah bur 31 Mar 1782 ( Sherman and Ann not bap in Foxton) William Brazier bur 27 Apr 1783 age 58 Hannah Brazier wid otp marr Phillip Prior Widr of Fowlmere on 22 Nov 1789 at Foxton. Hannah Prior of Shepreth bur 11 Apr 1815 Foxton age 75. Hope this helps. These are the only Braizors in the registers of Foxton. Tempsford

Tempsford, This is brilliant! What a minefield the BRAYSHER name variants are, but I'm pretty sure you've hit the nail on the head with these entries. The date and location for Susannah's birth/baptism is entirely correct. I've also come across a burial in Holy Trinity, Cambridge for a Hannah BRAYSHER aged 85 in 1814, so it's more than possible that this is Susannah's mother, for maybe she moved the short distance to Cambridge later in her life when/after her daughter married into the JOHNSON family... Very many thanks, keith ...or maybe not, re-reading what looks like Hannah being widowed and remarried and possibly buried in Foxton...

Hi Keith, Pleased to have helped. I mean't to say that Hannah Gray wasn't baptised in Foxton either. Its difficult to know which is the correct burial for Hannah although if she moved to Cambridge to be near her daughter that one seems more likely but its going to be difficult to sort out! Perhaps Hannah left a will. Sadly most of my ancestors were too poor to leave wills but you might have more luck.

Tempsford, I was thinking that the Hannah you found for me, buried in Foxton in 1815 aged 75, was more likely to be Susannah BRAYSHER's mother, as the one I found buried in 1814 might have been a bit too old... And I'm wondering whether the baptism of an Ann GRAY in Melbourn nearby on 13th April 1740 might be the same person as became Hannah BRAYSHER. keith

Hi Keith, Yes the burial for Hannah in Foxton is more likely. The name Hannah does appear as Ann a lot in records so the Melbourn baptism looks promising. I have a Hannah in my family baptised under Annamariah! This caused a lot of problems until I solved it with the poor law records!
