It may be worth looking in the parishes that are not on the IGI before you give up on this one.   I think people tend to forget that it is not full coverage by any means.   The local record office will be able to help you and there are also lists of parishes covered on the Hugh Wallis site and also on www.genuki.org.uk I think.  The PRO documents online site has a lot of pre 1858 wills - you can pay and download them.  Again not all so local record office will help.   Worth a look though   www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline

The IGI has an extracted marriage on 2 Feb 1808 at Totnes for a Peter NICHOLLS and Ann PRICE which might be of some relevance. They would be in early 20s if it is the Peter and Ann from 1851.

 Smiley Hi Ian,
thanks very much for that marriage -  which I think  is right.

I also have a brother to Peter Nicholls - William (Price?) so I would think this is right. I had forgotten all about William, but just rechecked the census and saw him. He is down as William, but on IGI William Price, if it is the right one.

On 71 census I have Peter Nicholls (bc 1785), widow, with a Mary A Brookling as a niece to him, she is widowed. I can't find anything for Mary A as a Nicholls (as far as I can be certain Peter had two brothers, no sisters are listed) but there is a mary A Price born in Devonport on IGI , birth place as stated on the 71 census.

Her parents are Abraham Price and Wilmot but I can't go any further on IGI.

So the mystery continues Smiley

Thanks for your help, it has certainly helped me on my trail. Cheesy

regards,
sigrid
