Beginner to researching family tree - Surname Mawbey
« on: Thursday 20 March 08 14:09 GMT (UK) »

Hey there,

I have just recently started to research my family tree and ive come to a standstill with my great great great grandfather - Joseph Mawbey born in 1813, Crick, Northamptonshire, died in 1884, same place. Ive tried looking in the parish records for a baptism and possibly who his parents might be, but the records i keep looking at dont seem to pass 1800. And the normal BMD index's dont start until 1837.

Please could anyone help me with my family tree??  Huh

Thanks in advance,

Katrina

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat!  Smiley

Is your Joseph the one in Crick in 1841 married to Elizabeth? There is another Joseph Mawby (a  farmer) in Crick b.c1791, possible father? Do you have access to the censuses to look? HO107/800/7 Folio 27 Page 18

You maybe able to find Mawbey/Mawby christenings in Crick with the Northamptonshire Records Office -

http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/Community/record/about_us.htm

Good Luck

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

This is complete guesswork but see what you think of these entries from the 1841 census.  Both were the only Mawby's in Crick at that time

Joseph Mawby 25 publican
Elizabeth 20

Living either in the same household or next door (next entry on the same image)

Joseph Mawby 50 farmer
Sarah 40 - not b Northants
William 20
Louisa Gee 14 not b Northants

Hello Smiley

Yes my joseph was married to an Elizabeth Crofts who was also from Crick, born 1821.

I have checked the other joseph that appears in the 1841 census and researched him all the way through and found that he wasnt the father to my 1813 joseph (quite disappointed because that would have made it so easy!!) I dont have the material to hand as to what i found out about the 1791 Joseph, but i wasnt able to tie him and my joseph together at any other point than living in the same street/area in the 1841 census.

What i do remember is joseph (1813) was a farmer at some point, but only of a 44 acre farm, Joseph (1791) had a 100 acre farm right throughout the census' even when he was 70+.

Just managed to access my info on joseph, 1791:

from the 1861 census:

Lived at mount Pleasant farm

Joseph Mawby 71  (born in Watford, not Crick) - Farmer, 100acres, employing one man and one boy - widowed
Joseph Mawby 47  (born in Watford, not Crick) married to sarah
Joseph Mawby 19  (born in Watford, not Crick) grandson
Martha Mawby 17  (born in Watford) grandaughter
Sarah Mawby 50  (born in Naseby) married to Joseph, 47

another Joseph from same census:

Joseph Mawby 64 (born in crick, leicester, england abt 1897 - too young for my joseph)
Sarah Mawby 60

My joseph, same census:

Elizabeth Mawby 40
Emily Mawby 6
George Mawby 12
Hannah Mawby 10
Joseph Mawby 47 (farmer of 44 acres, but no place name mentioned)

Hi

If Joseph Mawby and Elizabeth Crofts married after 1.7.1837 - a copy of their marriage cert should have the name of Joseph's father

Hi, thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately i havent managed to find a marriage reference between elizabeth and joseph yet, still looking for it in the BMD index. All i know is that they were married when the 1841 census was taken. So they must have married between 1836 and 1841 for Elizabeth to be of ''marriagable'' age (16-21).

Hi Katrina and welcome to Rootschat from me too!

otp means "of the parish" at the time of the marriage.  It doesn't necessarily mean they were born in the parish, but means they were considered as living in the parish.

Kind regards

Hi Katrina
Well, you are a Newbie, and a pretty competent one at that to be looking at censuses and posing questions here! Smiley

This is a very friendly and helpful site with a lot of experienced people who will look things up or point you in the right direction.

I see the FamilySearch LDS site doesn't have much for your Mawbeys but they do hold films for the parish registers in Crick, so if someone can't look at the registers for you, you could order the films at your nearest LDS centre and browse through them yourself.  http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp is for people searches and http://www.rootschat.com/links/0320/ is for place searches.  Have a play around on there - there are films of places all around the world.  There is a small charge to order films.

Have fun and keep on posting if you get stuck.

Kind regards

aww thank you for saying im quite competent so far!! Cheesy

I actually live no where near crick, nor northampton lol. Im actually in North lincolnshire/east yorkshire and have no idea where my nearest LDS center would be.

Its my aunties fault really as to why i started researching my tree, Ive always had an interest in our family even at my age of 23 lol, particularly my dads side, as he has italian blood running through him. But seeing as i cant get very far with the italian side at the moment, im trying to figure out the english side lol! Which seems to be just as difficult at times!

Ive registered on Ancestry.co.uk and am trying to fill my tree in slowly.

Ok, here's a link to the LDS centre in Lincoln:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0322/
Or you might find a nearer centre on that site.  And the Northamptonshire Records Office (the county archives) were very helpful when I phoned them. Smiley

Have a look at the Northamptonshire Board here on Rootschat and post a look-up request if you can't reach yourself.

Kind regards
