Partial Census Pics
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 04:01 GMT (UK) »

I understand that it is against the board rules to post a full page of a census transcription because of copyright laws.

A number of people have circumnavigated this rule over the past few weeks by not showing the full image, but just showing the part that is causing them difficulty thus:

(please don’t strain your eyes, this example was choosen at random for exemplary purposes only)

I’m sure that this sort of posting is excused in law by all the “fair quoting” etc rules and causes no legal problems, but can I please ask all Rootschaters who make this sort of posting to add a text version of the full transcript, and / or  the reference details.

The example given above comes from Ancestry 1891 images reference :

Information deleted by Copyright Editor: see below

With this information anybody wishing to decipher my quoted picture can find the part that is causing me difficulty in context, and will be much more able to help than if I had posted the picture alone, as so many Rootschaters have done recently.

Comment by Copyright Editor: It is acceptable to post small extracts of an image to help with interpretation.  This is not circumnavigating the rules it is within them.  It is not acceptable to post the full image or indeed to "add a text version of the full transcript".  Census transcriptions are only allowed from a non commercial source with acknowledgement of Crown Copyright.  Transcriptions can not be made from Ancestry as this is in breach of their terms.  RootsChat will not allow any content that is in breach of Ancestry's (or any other company/individual's) copyright
