Are there any Ammenhoff's out there?
« on: Thursday 20 March 08 14:43 GMT (UK) »

I have been trying to trace information on my ggrandfather. His name is Lawrence Frederick Ammenhoff born c1873. He was a Joiner - Journeyman so travelled alot. His father was also Lawrence Ammenhoff a Master Blacksmith. Lawrence married my ggrandmother Ada Jane Royffe 3rd April 1915 in Hammersmith.

Lawrence and Ada had 3 children Lawrence, Harold & Florence, Harold being my grandfather. All 3 children took their mothers name Royffe instead of becoming Ammenhoff. My father tells me that he thinks Lawrence was born in South Africa and his family might have come from Germany.

I do have a copy of Lawrence and harolds birth certificates however neither used Ammenhoff during their lives. Lawrence b1916 was killed in 1942 in Egypt and his death is registered as Royffe. Harold died in 1982 and is registered as Royffe. My father and his brother are also Royffe's.

I should mention Lawrence Ammenhoff married a second time. He married Ellen Dundas in 1921. They married after the death of my ggrandmother Ada, she died in childbirth 1919 so he was left with 3 children. Lawrence died about 1949 in Fulham, London.

I am a newbie when it comes to tracing outside the UK. Can anyone give me advice on how I would trace family in South Africa or Germany and how if I found anyone could I purchase certificates? I just don't know where to start if someone is not born in this country?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi,

there is a German site available for German-African emigration. You can practise German or click on the English version.

Good luck, mz

Here is another interesting one.  http://www.progenealogists.com/germany/articles/gdepart.htm

Happy Easter everyone!

Just a quick bit of advice before I OD on chocolate.

You should try to track down naturalization papers. My ggf, also of German birth, naturalized in Cape Town in 1902 before returing to the UK. My gf and many of his siblings were born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal.

The online SA archives are a good place to start:
