Hi, Everyone,
In my search for details of the JOHNSON family, who were in business at 51, Sidney Street, Cambridge from at least 1823 until the 1970's, I have discovered that William JOHNSON, b. 1811, who used to run the tailors and clothiers there with his brother Octavius, retired to live in Fulbourn by the 1871 Census, at a dwelling called "Mulberry Villa".
He dies some time after the 1891 Census, and in the 1901 his widow Emma is still living there, with "Pearce Lane" appearing to be where this house was situated.
Does anyone with local knowledge of the history of Fulbourn know of this house, where it was situated exactly, and when it might have been demolished/renamed. I cannot find anything by googling...

Ricky, hi again!
And thanks so much for finding that (rather smudgy!) old map for me with Mulberry Villa on. I've actually had a very prompt reply to a query to the Fulbourn Village History Society, and I am told that the building still exists with its entrance in Pierce (sic) Lane. Apparently it was once the nurses' home for "Home Close", formerly a county council managed care home. It gets several mentions in the "Fulbourn Chronicles" which I must get hold of, perhaps for sale at the local post office,

Yes, it's definitely still there, with the entrance on the north side of the S-bend in Pierce Lane, but is apparently privately owned again.

I would imagine that it would have been/is a large building, yes, if it had served as a nurses' home for a while...

You will have to go over there and take a look, and take some piccies, that what I do when looking for rellies house's .  . I was looking for a pub near where I live a few months ago,for someone on Roots, but it had been changed into a house. So went up and knocked on the door and asked if they minded if I took some photo's. They were perfectly happy to let me do it, and gave me some info of the people who lived in it before.

Haven't quite got out to Fulbourn village yet, but I did make a journey to Ascham Rd. Cambridge to look in the bound copies of the "Fulbourn Chronicles". It appears from the entries I found that the COLLIER family were there in Mulberry Villa from at least 1855 until 1863 when William JOHNSON must have snapped the place up at auction. Previous to that, in 1860, after William COLLIER sen. had died there was an auction of furniture and two "Valuable Oil Paintings": "The Ark of the Covenant" and "The Duke of Marlborough".
It appears that the house went out of the JOHNSON family in 1911 ("by instruction of the Trustees of the late William JOHNSON"). He had died in 1898, and his second wife Emma was still there in 1901.
An interesting piece of important family detail which I was able to glean from the Chronicles was the exact death date of William's first wife, Mary, given as April 26th 1865 in London. Might have spent a fruitless time searching for her death entry in Cambridgeshire without knowledge of that snippet...

There is a painting of The Duke of Marlborough in the London Portrait gallery attributed to John Closterman.
Whether this is the same painting you refer to is open to conjecture.

Thanks for that, I too have been looking on the internet and I think there has to be several paintings put on canvas of the famous man. We'll probably never discover which particular one it was hanging in Mulberry Villa...
Have come across a drawing or etching entitled: "Ark of the Covenant", but again, no real way of knowing if that was the one being gazed at by the COLLIER family up to 1860...

I suppose I will never know if this version of the Ark of the Covenant was the very same painting hanging in Mulberry Villa in 1860, only its buyer and subsequent owners would know the answer to that. But a very striking picture, nevertheless...
