I have a Samuel Vittery b. 1811 Brixham, Devon who married a Harriett Mary Hammick in 1839 at Dartmouth.  The only other mention I can find of this family is the birth of their son Samuel (Horatio) Hammick Vittery in 1841 and his burial in 1849 aged 8 at Brixham.
Samuel Vittery and his wife Harriett do not appear on any census - I can not find a death record for them - so I am wondering if they ended up abroad.  It is very likely Samuel was a mariner .
Any chance of finding out if they did end up overseas?

Hi

In the 1841 census at Townstal, Devon transcribed as Buttery but seems to read as Vittery

Samuel 30
Hannah 24
Samuel 2mo

In the 1851 census at Exeter St John

Archelaus (sic) Ball 47 head
Ann W Ball 9 daughter
Hannah M Vittery 30 sister-in-law
Amelia Hammick 22 sister-in-law
William Hammick 23 visitor

In Sept Qtr 1853 there is a marriage for Hannah Mary Vittery in Axbridge Reg Dist Vol 5c Page 1010

In Dec Qtr 1839 there is a marriage for Archelaus Ball. One of the possible spouses is an Elizabeth Hammick

In the IGI there is a baptism in Brixham Devon in 1817 for a Anna Mary Hammick.  Anna & Hannah are interchangeable so this is probably Hannah Mary from the 1851 census.

Its possible that Hannah & Harriet are the same person, that Samuel Vittery died possibly at sea which could account for the lack of a death certificate and Hannah re-married.

Also, FreeBMD has transcribed the 1839 marriage of Harriet Mary as Hammilton but a check of the complete BMD shows it is definately Hammick. The surname below is Hammilton.

Dear Andy
Thanks for that - it's spot on!
Yes it looks like Archeleus Ball first married Elizabeth Hammick and then married her younger sister - Hannah - the widow of Samuel Vittery.
The first I found of these was the death of the little boy Samuel Hammick Vittery in 1849 - looks like there were no other surviving children.  Thanks for the link to the 1841 as Buttery - I never would have thought of that.
