It is quite common for people known as Jack, to have been christened John. There are 3 in my immediate family, and I know of several more! Kooky

My husband is Jack only to his family and John to everyone else including me. I could never figure how Polly was a nickname for Mary. Then sometimes Edward is called Ted.

My father's uncle was only ever called "Jack" ....But he was registered & christened "John". Jack is an extremely common pet-form of John. The American President JFK, was known as "Jack" to family & friends.......

I am interested in the background of your Straughans as I also have Straughans in my family. Thomas Straughan and his wife Barbara left the Wooler area in the mid 1830s and went south, first to Newcastle, then to Felling, Heworth. I have been trying to connect this Thomas to sibs or parents and so far, it's a brick wall. Any chance that your Straughans may come from the same area? I have quite a bit of info about his children.

My grandmother's mother was Mary Ann Straughan b. 2 July 1849 to Thomas Straughan & Barbara Wintrop from the Wooler area. Sibs include Richard, (b Newcastle c1836), James (b c1837), William (b c 1842), Thomas (b c 1846), John George (b c1853), Barbara (b c 1855) and Elizabeth (b c 1857). All but Richard were born in Felling, Heworth. I know nothing of Thomas's parentage. From census info, I estimate that he was born c1812 in Wooler area. His wife Barbara was born 1814 in Chillingham.
Any chance that your Straughans might connect with this family?
By the way, the Straughan name continued through my grandmother's family (she was a Davidson) as a middle name for her son, as well as her brother and his son and grandson.
