Name & Religion come just after Date of birth....
|
Morning, This has been bugging me for a while, so it needs someone else's brain.
Elizabeth Partridge, spinster married William Pack, bachelor on 31 March 1834 at Pavenham, both were of this parish. Witnesses to the marriage were George Purser & Thomas Poole, but they also witnessed the 2nd marriage at Pavenham on that day. In case this was a joint marriage the other couple was Samuel Flow & Ann Boston, spinster.
1841 census, they are in Pavenham. both William & Elizabeth aged 25 born in county, along with children Benjamin 6, Mary Ann 4 & Joseph 2. The 1st 2 baptised at Pavenham.
1851 census, they are in Newport Pagnell (as Park) William age 36 born Pavenham, Elizabeth age 44 ? born Sharnbrook, & children Benjamin, Mary, Joseph, Eliza & Thomas.
1861 census they are in Newport Pagnell, William age 47 b Pavenham, Elizabeth 44 born Sharbrook, plus Joseph, Thomas, James, Samuel.
Elizabeth's death certificate says she died 14 Jan 1866 in Newport Pagnell, age 52, wife of William Pack.
So I'm looking for an Elizabeth P, born around 1814-1816 Sharnbrook, & then went to live in Pavenham. It was thought that she was the daughter of Richard & Mary Partridge, chr at Sharnbrook on 13/07/1823 at age 4 & half (as per PR) but she's the one who married Robert Inskip of Northill on 04/02/1840 at Sharnbrook.
Thanks for thinking about this
Cheers John (now off to Sainsburys - got to get a special Easter Egg !)

OK, someone is thinking. Thoughts may be disjointed!
In 1851 there's a Samuel, 56, farmer living in and born in Sharnbrook. He's got a couple of children, Harriet 19 and Ezra 20 who were born in Pavenham, plus a wife Jane. I can't find a marriage to Jane who was born in Oxon, and I suspect it was a second marriage. There's a Harriet and Ezra baptised a week apart in 1843 in Pavenham, parents Samuel and Frances - there's also martha at the same time, and she was 17 in 1841. Fanny was buried in Pavenham on 15 Apr 1847 age 48. I can't find this marriage either - she wasn't born in Beds per 1841
Whilst your Elizabeth seems a bit old to have been from Samuel and Frances, I wouldn't rule it out. Their non-baptism of children as infants, and the Sharnbrook/Pavenham connection might be worth researching further. Samuel must have moved back to Sharnbrook from Pavenham after 1841, so it's possible that Elizabeth was living with his family when she married in Pavenham - odd that this was the only Pavenham Partridge family.
Who was Samuel Partridge age 27 buried 24 Dec 1841 at Sharnbrook? Can't see his baptism
Sainsburys for a "special" egg!!! You must be the last of the real romantics!

So Soundex doesn't pick up Partride under a Partridge search!
An 1821 marriage of Samuel & Frances I think rules out Elizabeth who married in 1834 being their daughter, but there has to be a connection. And where's the baptism of Samuel somewhere between 1795 and 1801?
Mysteriouser and mysteriouser!
Post's just arrived including a Beds HRS 1933 book which includes the 1671 Hearth Tax for Beds. This is going to keep me going for hours!

David, Another thought was that she may be daughter of John Partridge & Elizabeth Ward who married in 1810 at Sharnbrook. John P was son of Thomas P & Martha Swannell, & born c.1783 died 1846; he was a Wheelwright on 1841 census at Sharnbrook. Other children on that census were Martha 1811, John 1817, James 1821 Charles 1826, none of which have I found a baptism for.
Was the Hearth Tax book the original 1933 (vol 16) edition with full details or the 1990 reprint with just the highlights. I have the latter book in BFHS library with a spare copy at home.
Regards John

The original 1933 edition, with the full returns. Trouble is I can't find an explanation of some of the entries eg I, II, III, IV against some of the names. Your reprint doesn't expand on these I suppose?
There's a rather attractive window between 1811 and 1817 into which Elizabeth would fit very nicely! Proving it is another matter.
Is there any family connection between Samuel b 1895 and John m 1810? In other words what was Elizabeth doing in Pavenham - was Samuel her uncle perhaps? David

Hearth Tax, the Preface has an explanation by Paricia Bell. The roman numerals after some of the names are because those names appear in the entry for that particular town or village in one or more of the four Subisdy Rolls for Bedfordshire. Perhaps I should scan & email it to you.
I = 1545-6; II = 1580-1; III = 1596-7; IV = 1627-8

Yes please. That explanation doesn't appear in the original, or if it does I haven't found it. There's 94 pages of the return - is it the same in the reprint?

Hang onto it - it's going to be invaluable! I've already found some of my names and got ideas about others - eg my Faulkners who arrived in Southill in 1771 from Cardington and from Haynes before that - the only Faulkners in Beds in the Hearth Tax Return were in Maulden
I've printed off the explanation of the roman numerals and slipped it in the book. Odd that an explanation wasn't given in the original. Thanks for the scan

Is there any family connection between Samuel b 1895 and John m 1810? In other words what was Elizabeth doing in Pavenham - was Samuel her uncle perhaps?
Samuel Partridge as per census was born 1796 in Sharnbrook, his father is Jeremiah on his marriage certificate to Jane in 1847, & there is a baptism in Sharnbrook in 1815 states birth as 1799, has parents Jeremiah & Martha (possibly Pressland)
On the 1810 marriage of John P to Elizabeth Ward, witnesses were Jeremiah Partridge & John Ward.
On the marriage of John's daughter Martha Partridge to John Payne in 1849, a witness is Samuel Partridge.
