Turnford Institute, Cheshunt
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 18:56 BST (UK) »

Hi, is there anyone out there please that can throw any light, or point me in any direction, to enable me to get some information regarding the Turnford Institute.  I believe my grandfather to have been a boarder there in 1901, something to do with market gardening I think, everywhere and every site i visit draws blanks  Huh   i have tried 'googling' but again information is limited.

Many thanks
Kaz

Hi Kaz,

This is just a guess but may point you in the right direction:
A large horticultural firm called Rochfords owned all the land to the east of Cheshunt Wash opposite Halfhide Lane right upto the railway line. They sold the land in the late 1990's and its all now a housing estate. This is the only firm I can think off that were into market gardening on a large scale in the area.

The actual ring road around the estate is named after the founder Thomas Rochford.

Hope this is of some use.
