Hello Surrey. I am trying to find information regarding several of the offspring of Charles and Harriet Kippin. (1) Charles Kippin was born in 1843, but I cannot find a birth entry in the BDM. He married Jane Goodge in 1866 in London (in BDM). They appear in the 1871 census at Mitcham, Surrey, but after that there does not seem to be any reference to them in either the census or BDM. Where have they disappeared to? (2) Hannah Kippin was born in 1844, but again I cannot a birth entry in the BDM. (3) Alfred Kippin was born in 1846 (in BDM), but disappears from the census in 1871 & 1881, reappearing in the 1891 & 1901 census married to Rosena (or Rosina) of St Lukes, London. I cannot find a BDM marriage entry therefore do not know Rosena's original surname. And where were they during those missing census years? (4) James Kippin was born in 1850 (I do have a BDM entry for this). He appears in the 1861 census at Epsom, but in none thereafter. I cannot find a BDM death entry, so what happened to him? There may possibly be information in the parish registers, but if anyone can fill in any of the gaps from any source at all I will be most grateful. Many thanks, Scobie

Hi Scobie,
Request for a little more information:
name of Jane's father (from their marriage certificate which I think you have?) places of birth for all the people you mention as recorded on the census records that you have found for them.
Thanks
Nell

Hello Little Nell and Rosie99. Thanks for responding. Regarding more information, all the Kippins in this family were born in Epsom (or Horton, which is just on the outskirts of Epsom). Rosina (surname unknown) was born at St.Lukes, London, information gained from the census. I do not have the marriage certificate for Charles Kippin and Jane, but working back from the census to the BDM, Jane becomes Jane Goodge, and then back to the census where Jane Goodge was born in Offley, Hertfordshire, daughter of George and Hannah Goodge, also both born in Offley. Thanks for referring me to Familysearch and I.G.I. references. I have checked them but found they gave me no more information than I already have at this point. Regards, Scobie

Alfred Kep(p)ing only appears twice on the censuses
This man only appears once but bears a resemblance to Alfred Kep(p)in and his wife in 1891.
1881 census RG11 361 folio 76 18 Badsworth Street St Lukes Alfred Edwards Head Married 38 Railway porter Epsom Rosa Edwards Wife Married 40 Boot closer St Lukes
This is the only census Alfred Edwards born Epsom is on and likewise Rosa* Edwards born St Lukes.
1891 census RG12 245 folio 43 80 Britannia Street Shoreditch Alfred Kippin Head Married 44 Railway porter Epsom Surrey Rosena Kippin Wife Married 48 St Lukes London
Perhaps Alfred was keeping company and got enumerated twice?

Hello again everybody. Well done. Fresh eyes can see what I have missed. Alfred was here all the time - I was thinking that perhaps he had enlisted for a time or spent time abroad. Obviously not. I have a BDM death entry which I suspect may be his - September quarter 1904 Holborn 1b 427 age 56 - a possibilty anyway at this stage. As for the possible double entry in the 1891 census under an alias, I can see a definite similarity, but cannot see how we can ever know for certain if it is the same person. Having found no obvious entry in BDM fora marriage between Alfred Kippin and Rosina I am beginning to think that this may have been an 'unofficial liaison' between the two. Regards, Scobie

The double possibility is on the 1881 census between Alfred Kepping the unmarried porter in Shoreditch who was in lodgings and Alfred Edwards the married railway porter in St Lukes with Rosa. The only way you might be able to tell is in tracking Alfred's 'wife back through the censuses.
