Penns of Egham
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 12:50 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,

I'm trying to find out more about the Penn family of Egham.  My Great, Great Grandmother was Eliza Penn born in 1841.  According to her wedding certificate her parents were Mary and Henry Penn.  I couldn't get this to tie up in any of the records as the only Mary Penn I could find was listed in the census as a cousin and no Henry of the right age could be found.  However following a lot of investigation it seems she may be the illegitimate daughter of Mary Penn.  Henry Penn was actually her Grandfather who died before she was born and I believe they used his name.  She was baptised in the neighbouring parish of Thorpe where the vicar wouldn't have been aware of the deception!

Has anyone else come across this situation?  Does anyone else have any more information on the Penn's.  They lived in St. Anne's Heath and were Gardeners/Agricultural Labourers.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
She might not have been illegitimate.  The IGI gives her baptism as;
Eliza Ann Penn 29/8/1841 Thorpe d/o Henry & Mary.
The Surrey Marriage Index DOES have a marriage of a Henry & Mary;
Henry Penn to Mary BEATUPE at Thorpe 23/2/1819 by banns & both bride & groom from Egham.
Having written the above I went to the 1841 census to find the family
1841 - Egham  HO107/1074/bk 11/41/7

Mary Penn 45  Ind
MARY         20
John          15  ag lab
James        15  Tailors app.
Ellen          11
Maria           8
David           6
All born Surrey

At first I thought Eliza might have been the daughter of the mother, Mary, but found the FreeBMD death of Henry Penn Q4 1838 reg. district of Windsor of which Egham is a part.  The Surrey Burial Index has the burial as 4/11/1838 age 44 at Egham.  So it does look as if Eliza was illegitimate & they've used Mary's father name, Henry, as a husbands name.

Found the following at the Surrey History Centre site;
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01v2/

Sub series ref: 2575/3/8/
BONEHAM, EGHAM

Date(s): 1622

See 1201/12 for conveyance of 1650.

 Item ref: 2575/3/8/1
Bargain and sale by Benedict Ashley of Thorpe, husbandman, to Henry Penn of Thorpe, yeoman, of a close of 14a pasture called Boneham in Egham, in the occupation of Thomas Durdant and late in the occupation of Ashley, abutting Sunden Heath [St Anns Heath] on the west, Tromps [Trumps] Hatch on the south, land of the manor of Hall Place on the east and land of the manor of Milton on the north, for £40

So looks as if the family had a bob or two a couple of centuries before  Smiley

Hi Jane,

You can see how I got to the assumption that they used grandad's name at the baptism.  We came to this conclusion after a lot of communication on the BBC Family History message board!!

Thanks for the info from Surrey History Centre.  Wonder where the money went!
