Coldingham, Wilson Family
« on: Friday 21 March 08 21:25 GMT (UK) »

Trying to trace the family of Joseph Wilson born 1799., baptised 13.10.1799. He may have had a sister called Agnes, also born in Coldingham in 1780. The family lived on the Boarders and some later moved to Berwick.

Hi Nicola,

There are a lot of Wilson's in Coldingham according to the 1841/51 census,
there was a Agnes bap. 27/5/1784 Coldingham, parents according to the Latter Day Saints were George Wilson and Janet Craik married 29/5/1783 Coldingham, neither of them show up on the 1841/51 census of Coldingham.

Joseph dosn't show up on the LDS site, have you tried the "scotlandspeople" web site.

Hello Nicola - a tough one.

You gave Joseph Wilson with the specific baptism date.  The IGI has this person as a 'submitted' record for 13 Oct 1799 , Cockburnspath, Berwickshire
link below will show a map and proximity of Cockburnspath to Coldingham.

Parents of this Joseph Wilson on same 'submission' are George Wilson and Mary Russel

There are a total of 09 children born to this couple - no Agnes.  All born in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire

1.  Mary Wilson ch.  30 Nov 1795 - extracted
2.  Philip Wilson ch 22 Nov 1797 - submitted
3.  Joseph Wilson ch 13 Oct 1799 - submitted - twin
4.  John Wilson  ch 13 Oct 1799 - submitted - twin
5.  William Wilson ch.  09 Aug 1801 - submitted
6.  Nancy Wilson  ch.  22 May 1803 - extracted
7.  Elizabeth Wilson ch.  14 Apr 1805 - extracted
8.  George Wilson  ch.  29 Jan 1807 - submitted
9.  James Wilson  ch.03 July 1809 - submitted

Please note that the first child is born to a George Wilson and 'Polly' Russel

A search of the IGI - www.familysearch.org  shows 370 Agnes Wilson from 1770 to 1790 in Scotland.  However only 3 in Berwickshire - all submitted.

1.  ch 25 May 1775 in Coldingham  to Moses Wilson and Jean Johnston
2.  abt 1780  in Coldingham - no other info apart from name - no parents
3.  abt 1780 Coldingham.  No parents name given.  However spouse name of Henry Steele given and a marriage date of 27 Nov 1807.  This comes from an 'ancestral file' and the name of the submitter in the USA is given.

There is also after 1800 the Agnes highlighted by Becky - a submitted entry.

Hopefully this is of some use :O)

Regards,    Steve

From a certificate:  Mordington, Berwick 6 December 1832.

John Wilson and Mary Clazy appeared before the session and were rebuked for their clandestine marriage.  Mary was the daughter of James Clazey and Helen Kerr (Carr), Chirnside.  This couple made their way to Surrey where both are buried.
