1837 marriage, Gates/Jarvis, Saffron Walden, please.

Hi all,
I'm having trouble finding the marriage between a William gates c 1816, Great Chesterford and a Mary Ann Jarvis c1817 Saffron Walden, the information I have is that they marry in 1837 Saffron Walden but it doesn't appear on Free BMD or IGI, I believe the cut of date for BMD is Sept 1837? First child Joseph is born dec 1837 ( please see previous post ) so probably between feb/march ?
Does anyone have access to parish records for this period ? I would be very grateful for any help in this.

Hi Pete,

Boyds has a marriage for a William Gates to Marion Jarvis in 1837 in Great Chesterford. I wonder if somewhere along the line there is a mistranscription Undecided Maybe someone could look the actual register for you?

Marion and Mary Ann very similar names Undecided

Civil Registration started in the July of 1837 so the first quarter shown would be Sept. as you said.    I did check the complete Marriage entries for Sept & Dec 1837 but there was an entry for a William Gates.

Hi Frances and Meliora,
thanks for your replies, the marriage of a William Gates to a Marion Jarvis seems to be too much of a coincidence to me, like you say Mary and Marion are very similar. Does the register include Fathers name or give witness's names, maybe I can tie it down with that.
The information I have has been passed on to me and I believe it is all based on Census information as there are no certificates or parish reg. details etc, so I'm trying to prove all this.   Tongue

Unfortunately, no father's names are shown on marriages pre July 1837, there will be the names of two witnesses.   It is worth while if you look at the original entry in the PR to check whether one or other of the witness' names occur at any of the other marriages ( there are usually three to an A4 page) as sometimes a church mermber such as a verger stood in as witness if the couple turned up without enough witnesses.

thanks for that, I'm based in Holland, so I'll see if I can order the appropriate microfilm records at one of the IGI record centres (family search) and see if the witnesses give any clues.
