McManus & Callaghan Co Cavan
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 09:44 UTC (UK) »

Thomas McManus and Bridget CALLAGHAN (spelling?)of Cavan are known to have had at least 4 children born in Cavan (parish not known): Hugh McManus b. abt 1839, Ellen McManus b. abt 1840,Mary McManus b. abt 1847 and Ann McManus b. abt 1848.
I know about these children because they all migrated to Australia.

It is not known exactly when Ellen arrived in Australia, but she married in South Australia in 1857 and settled in New South Wales in abt 1860. Hugh and his wife Elizabeth O'Donnell and 2 children arrived in NSW in 1884.

Other McManus family settled in South Australia but I do not have any details about them. Looking for any links or info about these families. I know nothing about Bridget Callaghan or her ancestors and am desperate for leads Smiley.

Hi Mary
You're wonderful!!!
Thanks so much.  That is them - their dates of birth match in with the ages on their death certificates.

Is the Parish mentioned? I have no idea where the family lived.  Does Cavan mean the parish of Cavan in Co Cavan?
ciao Chris

Ellen McManus born c 1840  Cavan  (sister of Hugh) is my gg grandmother.  I haven't been able to find out much about her prior to her marriage as she was illiterate when she arrived in Aust so there is nothing that she recorded.  She must had been a very strong character as she went on to run one of the first dairies on the NSW goldfields

Using http://cavan.brsgenealogy.com/ , I was able to get a match for Mary in 1875 and Ellen in 1879 in the parish of Drumlane.  Not sure if they are yours or not, but it is a potential.

There was an Elizabeth that was born in 1877 in Cavan, but I didn't do the trial and error to determine which Parish.

Thanks for your help John
Sorry that it has taken so long to reply - serious family health issues.
I checked out that website - it's great but very expensive, i spent a lot of money very quickly. Still not sure which are mine.  I'll try again Smiley
Thanks
