giving up on GOOD from Diss
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 08:31 GMT (UK) »

After 30+ years I've decided to give up looking for the birth of  Mary  Good (possibly from Diss).  The first  record of her is as a witness to a marriage in 1807 and then  the births of her three children - 1807, 1814 and 1821 all in Diss.  She died in Feb 1837 at the age of 54 but I have searched without success for her origins.   Visits to various record offices searching parish records etc for Diss  and surounding parishes  have yielded nothing more.    I may not be able to find out more about Mary but I wonder if there is anyone reading this who might have connections with her elder son William Good (1814)?

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  I can't help with your query but I have great sympathy with the giving up.  I was just thinking in the night that after nearly 30 years I have still not got beyond 1800 with certainty on my main line.  I can take the name back to 1600s but cannot get that vital link!
It must be there somewhere....

Hi Crumble,

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

I've changed the title of your topic.
Maybe GOOD or Diss will catch someone's eye - you never know  Smiley Smiley

Hope you enjoy RootsChat, and even if we can't find Mary, hopefully we can help you find a few others.

Hello Crumble, although new to Rootschat, I guess after 30 years you have tried most of the on-line resources.

But just in case - have you registered Good with Norfolk Surnames Interest?

http://uk.geocities.com/davidbooty@btinternet.com/NorfolkSurnames/Index.html

(though I can only find one Good there at the moment)

And putting the name on "Surnames interest" here might produce something.

My names are there, and nothing happens for months, then every now and again, someone gets in touch, and occasionally, it produces another little piece in the jigsaw.

I do research in Norfolk and Suffolk Parish Registers from time to time. I'll keep a lookout for you.

I agree with meles that after 30 years of searching I can't imagine that I could be of any help with searching.

I only have one silly question which may appear very elementary to you.  If you first found her as a withness to a marriage in 1807 are you sure that Good was her maiden name? I understand her children could easily have her maiden name if she never married but isn't it possible that she was a married women when she witnessed the wedding if nothing prior to that is known?

It could be possible that even though her first born was also born in 1807 she had left her husband and therefore did not list him on any birth registrations.

Just a thought.....my ancestors have done wackier things.

Thankyou so much to everyone who has taken time to respond to my message. I am feeling more positive now and ready to move on!
I remain  hopeful that someone will be in touch who has a connection with William Good b.1814 and his son George b.1836 and married to Jane.
