RootsChat Links
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 13:39 GMT (UK) »

I know there is  a RootsChat Links by which we can "shrink" links that are too long, but I can't work out how to use it.  Whenever I try by highlighting a link in a reply I am making, all it seems to do is shrink the webpage of the posting, rather than shrinking the link I am trying to quote.

What am I doing wrong?

Lizzie

This is what I do:

1) Highlight and copy the link you want to shrink

2) Go to the bottom of this page and click on 'shrink link'

3) Paste your long link into the window and click 'shrink link'

4) A new page will come up, with your old 'long link' and your new 'short link'

5) Right click on the short link and click on 'copy shortcut'

6) Paste the short link into your message.

Sounds longwinded but takes about 30 seconds.

There is an easier way .... use the url tags ... third symbol from left on bottom row above smileys

Code:
[url= very long link] use text to define your link [/url]

gives you

use text to define your link
- in this case it's The Virtual Mitchell Library

Oh that's great thanks.  I'll go back and try to modify a long link I've just posted.

It didn't work too well as the link I had was way too long, so I went back to the basic website, and searched for the page I wanted and that way got a much shorter link, which I've now posted.

I'll try again when I have a long (but not too long) link.

I think it should work with any length of link.

If you are using the url tag method you need to remember the first tag opens with
[
and then
url=
followed by the link
and then
]

The text after this becomes your highlighted link and you then close the url with
[/url]

BUT you won't see anything until you post the message and the computer does the rest and converts your long url to the highlighted link

Sorry to be a pain, but I can't begin to understand your method - please can you explain in words of one syllable for an oldie. And if it's so easy, why is there a shrink link facility?

Hi Jennifer,

there are two topics here, that I always quote when I shrink others peopls' links

Moderator Comment: URL modified, as it was 'stretching' the screen
See tips here, to avoid this:

Topic: Shrinking Very Long Website Links / Topic: Post too W--I--D--E!

Hope this helps,
Bob

And if it's so easy, why is there a shrink link facility?

I think the shrink link facility was introduced to assist those who were finding difficulty in using other methods. There was also an increase in the use of another facility called TinyUrl which although an excellent tool and facility did gain a little notoriety as it was abused by a small minority to divert to scamming sites.
The URL tag method is the original method provided on Rootschat and is very simple to use once you get the hang of it.

The first bit of it is the opening tag
Code:
[url=]
. Your very long link should be pasted in immediately after the = sign and before the right hand square bracket ]

After this bracket ]  you can then type in anything you want .... and this information becomes the highlighted link. It can be anything you wish "click here" "birth certificate" "found this great site"

To complete the link you then close off with the url closing tag [/url]

and you continue typing as normal to complete your message.

The body of the message you post will not change until you have posted it and then it appears as a blue highlighted link.

This example is the one used by Trystan in the links that Berlin Bob has provided

Code:
[url=http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=635500&Y=260500&A=Y&Z=3] Street map [/url]

By using the shrink link facility you are provided with a relatively anonymous link to click on and while there is nothing wrong with that I personally prefer to give more information and a name for the link

shrink link = www.rootschat.com/links/02n/
url method = Street map

I have just spent about half an hour trying to work out why I didn't get the all important = sign when I clicked on the 'insert hyperkink' icon.

Then I realized I had to insert the = sign myself......

Have a look at this - ye olde inne

Yes, it works.  Grin

Many thanks

Thank you everyone.

Berlin-Bob - I knew there was a "tutorial" somewhere, I should have searched more before posting my request.  Never mind it brought the topic further up the list for newbies.
