I have the birth of my 3xgt grandmother in Dalston, CUL taken from IGI Eleanor Aikin b. 1773 daughter of Richard Aikin. There are several siblings: Jane Aikin b 1790; Jane Aikin b 1796 d. 1798; John Aikin b 1776 ; Margaret Aikin b 1780; Robert Aikin b 1783 William b 1785 all Dalston. I would love to know the name of their mother. Eleanor appears to be the eldest child so I am guessing a marriage abt 1770-3. If anyone could check the parish records for Dalston I would be eternally grateful! Regards Bellini
Dalston baptisms - real ones - not made-up ones that say "about 1773" are in the IGI, batch P001961.
The only Eleanors around that time were 1769 BROWN 1773 NIXON 1775 SEWART and no AIKIN before 1798.
The info that you are using is based on the assumptions- 1) Eleanor was married in Dalston, so must have been born there; 2) She was about 25 when she married.
You should be aware of the different types of IGI records - you will find
Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church. Records of this type range from the entirely fictional to the rock solid reliable. The fact that something can be found on the Internet does not automatically mean it is a reliable fact.
Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record. This type ought to be a faithful transcription from a baptism or marriage register subject (of course) to the possibility of transcrition errors.
Remember that the IGI, as its name suggests, is an Index, telling you where you may find something. You ought really try to verify its contents before accepting something as fact ... or as Hugh Wallis puts it I will not reiterate in detail here the standard warnings about relying on the IGI - as with any secondary source it should only be used as a finding aid and the primary source material should be referred to for definitive information.
