Seeking baptism of a Sophia (surname unknown) in Witham, Essex 1804/1805 She married an Isaac Ansell and appears in Brighton on 1841/1851 census with age consistent with birth in those years. Have never been able to find their marriage so dont know her surname.I am hoping there are not many Sophias in that time span in Witham. Am trying to avoid purchasing birth cert of one of their children if possible. Their first child was baptised in St. Dunstan Stepney.

You cannot search the IGI without a surname .
When was the first child born, we can see if we can find a marriage but I think you will have to purchase a childs birth cert, even if a marriage is found you need to con firm it.

I can confirm that there are no "Sophia" baptisms at all in Witham, St. Nicholas parish 1804-1806 inclusive.
Sometimes a £7 certificate is unavoidable and can save a lot of unnecessary work freeing up your time for better use!

Thanks for checking Witham records; will order a birth cert from Gro unless anyone just happens to locate the marriage; I suspect it may have been at St George/East or one of the e London parishes not on IGI but probably £ 7 and reference checking is the quickest way.

Setzer definitely sounds like a foreign name to me. The only Setzer's on the 1841 census are ticked as " born in foreign parts."
There's an Isaac and Sophia Ansell on the 1841 census living in Upper North Street, Brighton. Both aged 35, with 6 children. She is ticked as born in foreign parts, so no connection with Witham at all.
The reference is HO107/1122/10/F23 if you want to have a look.
Out of interest, why did you think your Sophia was born in Witham? Have you seen her on a later census?

Oops yes, sorry, got carried away.....
By the way, on the 1861 census, Sophia Ansell says she was born in Holland.

Thanks, Diblet: Very strange about the Witham reference in 1851; perhaps the enumerator misheard? yet it seems very specific?! Clearly it is the same lady, but living with her son in Kent. I have her as dying in 1862 (Brighton) but will now recheck this. Isaac died in 1860 before 1861 so where he was in 1851 is a mystery too. I will look to see if there is any clue on the marriage certificate from 1828 at Westminster record office to where Sophia came from but suspect it will just say "of this parish"! None of their children post 1837 that appear on IGI/census appears to have been registered so no opportunity to buy a bith cert from GRO to check her maiden name. Perhaps they just did not know the system; I wonder too whether Witham was where she arrived in England from Holland? You have been very helpful so if you have any more thoughts, please keep replying! TaylorWallace

Sorry for not replying patrish, no notification, and have only just found this thread again. The entry came from an Archive CD Books Church Records disc. Boyds Index gives the year but not the actual date.
