Help Needed, please.
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 21:32 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to trace my husbands great grandfather, Joseph Wheeler, through the census records but I am not having much luck.

Joseph Wheeler married Mary A Trimmer 1876 in All Saints, Knightsbridge, Middlesex. Their address on the marriage cert is given as 17 Montpelier Row.

Joseph gives his age as 40 and he is a widower. The 2 witnesses are Jesse Trimmer (which is Mary's brother) and Jane Sander/ Saunder. I do not think that Jane is a relation because I can't find any connection to Joseph or Mary.

Joseph's gives his fathers name as Thomas Wheeler (deceased) and Thomas's occupation is a farm baliff. Joseph's occupation is a Gardener.

Joseph and Mary later move to Meriden in Warwickshire and Joseph Wheeler dies in Meriden in 1880 aged 49.

Now because Joseph and Mary are not on the 1871 census together and Joseph died before the 1881 census, I don't know how to find him on the other census records (1871 back).

From the death record and the marriage cert Joseph approx birth age is 1831-6.

I have tried find Joseph Wheeler on the census with father Thomas but there are quite a few of them.

Does anyone know how I can find the right Joseph Wheeler?

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Hi Kelly,

There is a possible Joseph Wheeler b. abt 1830 Silsoe Bedfordshire, in 1841 & 1851 he was with family, father Thomas an Ag. Lab.  He was in later census married to a Mary and was a gardener with 2 children, in 1871 he was a boarder in Northamptonshire, a gardener.  Can't see him in 1881, and a possible death registration for wife Mary
Mar 1870  Wheeler  Mary aged 37  Ampthill  3b 277

Full details if you think this may be your Joseph

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for your help, it is truly appreciated.

I have seen the Joseph born in Silsoe, and I haven't found him in the 1881 census also.

Is there any way that I can prove that the Joseph born in Silsoe is actually my Joseph?

Difficult, because all you have to go on is his father's name.  This one looks extremely likely.  If only the two daughters from the marriage to Mary would have been witness to his 2nd marriage - aha! one daughter is Jane Amelia, could she have married a Sander??

Hi Barbara,

From looking at the census records it looks like Jane may have married a James F Edwards.

The marriage for Jane is June quarter of 1884 in Yarmouth.

Who was the informant on Joseph's death cert? Any clues from that?

Hi Barbara,

The informant on the death cert is Ann Greaves, who was present at time of death.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put that there was lots of Joseph Wheeler's with father Thomas on census. I meant that there are quite a few Joseph Wheeler's, on the 1841 there are a few with just mothers and no fathers.

Did you trace them forwards in census to see if they were gardeners?  The only other thing I can think of is if he left a will

Hi Barbara,

I have started tracing some of them, I will be tracing the rest tomorrow.

Do you know how I would find out if he left a will?

My husband knows that Joseph's wife Mary was left a cottage in a will but he is not sure who it was that left it to her.

Hi Barbara,

Joseph died 22 Feb 1880.

Do you know if findmypast cover that date?

Hi Barbara,

I think I will contact them to see if he did leave a will, My husband knows that someone left Mary a cottage. If it wasn't Joseph I can only think it must have been her brother.

Thank you for all of your help and advice, it is truly appreciated.

I wonder also if it's worth tracing the rest of his family, he seemed to move about a bit, maybe they did too, and maybe came to live nearby, not proof but worth a try.

Hope you can find a will, that's really all I can think might prove where he came from. Please do post anything you find out
Kind regards
