My great uncle Samuel Pierpoint emigrated to Australia sometime between 1901 and 1911. However his ship was wrecked off New Zealand (legend sys that he saved his carpentry tools from the wreck) and he apparently spent around twelve months in New Zealand before moving on to Australia. Can anyone suggest how I could find out anything about his life in New Zealand? I do not know when he sailed from England or on which ship. He finallly settled in Glen Niven, Queensland, Australia.

Yay - I found another one!
|
Had a quick look on Findmypast http://www.findmypast.com and found this:
Name: PIERPOINT Firt name: Saml Sex: M Year of departure: 1908 Port of departure: London Destination country: New Zealand Destination port: Wellington
Looks like the ship may have been the Awara - there's a passenger list on Papers Past - Evening Post, Volume LXXVI, Issue 124, 24 November 1908, Page 8 - but no mention of a shipwreck? http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz
This may not be your chap - there is also an S W Pierpoint (born 1885) on a ship from London to Sydney/Melbourne in 1911?
Cheers Fiona

Fiandmo Thanks I had originally found the 1911 entry on Findmypast and had assumed that this was my Samuel PIerpoint. However, the Australian descendants were sure that he arrived before this. The 1908 Samuel seems to be a better bet. I'll check it out. Again, many thanks for the look-up. Tofgem

Rounding up ancestors can be hard work!!
|
Hi....on the subject of the name Pierpoint, I have a grgr uncle who married a Florence Pierpoint, Bury St Edmunds, Suff, England. As this is not such a common name, does this Pierpoint feature in your research? She was born in Bury St Edmunds at 1879 and married a Harry Ernest Simkin.
Cheers K

Hi Unlike most of the other branches of my family the only Pierpoints I have found so far are in the Cheshire and Lancashire area (apart from those who emigrated to Australia). Sorry, but as yet I have not found any who originated from Suffolk or who migrated there. Good hunting.

Well some one had to do the job-& if they had been direct ancestors you'd have needed to get them on the family tree, you wouldn't have wanted to keep them HANGING around, sorry about that Keeweegal but I couldn't help myself, regards Nipy

My Australian relatives reckon that they are related to the hangmen. My mother would be horrified if we were, but.... One day, when I have some time..................... I'll investigate. There are certainly no direct links.

HI Tofgem,I've read up all about The Pierrepoints as hangmen & joking a side it really is very interesting in fact I found it quite fascinating, especially as Tom had to execute one of my ancestors Bernard Kirwin 1943 who Brenden Behan's The Quare Fellow was based on.What a shame there not directed ancestors of yours we could have shared a common link ! happy investigating-Nipy
