Hi,
There used to be a canal museum on Canal Street, at Nottingham. Sadly, it's now gone - the building is a canal-side pub/restaurant now. Not sure where their information went to (perhaps the tourist information service at Nottingham might tell you, or The Brewhouse Museum - 0115 915 3600). The Nottingham Archives office might have have records of waterway and canal companies.
Not sure which period you're concentrating on, but this link might just start you off:

There were wharfs along the River Leen long before Cannal Street was built - some of the old books on Nottingham tell you more.
Kind regards,
Paulene.
P.S. My husband's ancester's lived about 100 yards away from where the explosion took place! Thankfully they all survived, but the houses there were damaged and they had to moved.
