Hi Sofhe, Are you still searching for Jessie Mackay born Strathy? My brother in law is John Mackay from Somerset. His family were from this area and his aunt Jessie ran a village store-? Melvich There is a Jessie buried in Bettyhill cemetery. I was there in April this year. Whilst I am not researching this family I would be very happy to contact John and his wife. I think Jessie may hve been Jessie Mary and I also think there is a photo of her and her grave. Let me know, it would be a pleasure tohelp, Best wishes, Ian

Hi Sofee, Probably not the same Jessie. Mine was born in Orkney in 1883. Parenys believed called Mcpherson. She married a John Mackay a merchant of Portskerra. No children. She had two brothers, Hugh and Davey. Hugh was my binlaws father. I don't know what, if anything else my John knows, but just ask me. Best wishes, Ian

Hi again, I know you already have some of this information but i've written it to make sense to myself as well!
Willie John (the grieve) married to Polly Mackay, they lived in Newlands, Bettyhill and had 3 children - Ian, Billy and Avril (1939). They left Bettyhill and moved to Aylesbury, Bucks where they must of had 2 more children.
(out of interest - the grieve is the person who was responsible for all the land and animals belonging to the hotel, my great uncle got this job when Willie John left)
Dodds (Georgina) married to Marcus Bannerman (from Helmsdale/Kildonnan area), they had 4 children Margaret (now Mackay) Irene (now Robertson) Emily (now Wade, previously Campbell) and Marcus. They also brought up Dodd's nephew (who's mother died), his name was Mackie Mackay, he had two other siblings who were brought up in Caithness. Mackie could of been a half brother to Willie John.
Dodd's mother and father were Kirsty and Red George who lived in Naver, Bettyhill. Therefore Jessie Mackay could not be a half sister as you gave her parents names as William and Alexandrina and I don't know who Christina is. Also my aunt is a bit confused because of the age difference between Jessie and Dodds (18 years) as Kirsty and George married young and lived until old age
I'm not sure who William and Christina would of been (perhaps grandparents?)
I can get in touch with Irene Robertson (Bannerman) to clarify and get some more info if you like. Do you mind me asking who you are and where you live?

Hi Lisa,
I am Mackie Mackays niece......my father was his brother Colin Mackay, and Willie Johns half brother... the info I have on their mother Jessie is very little as my father was only 6 or 7years when his mother Jessie died and he was sent to live with his paternal grandfather Colin Mackay the joiner in the village of Reay, On Jessie's birth and death record it names her mother as Lexie Mackay [Alexanderina] and William Mackay Salmon fisher they married 1857.......its all very confusing as their is Mackays on both sides......Dodds is a relation I know that but will have to look up my records. I'd love to find out as much as possible anything you can help me find out about my grans family would be greatly appreciated
