Toon Family
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 12:59 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

I'm interested in the Toon family from Gosport in Hampshire?  My earliest ancestor on this line is William Toon, born around 1755, although I don't know where.  It looks as if most of the Toons in the UK originate in or around Leicestershire.

There is an, almost certainly apocryphal,  family story that the Toon family used to "own" a large proportion of Gosport and gambled it away!  Has anyone else heard this story?

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin -

Haven't heard that story - I come from the area and the name is not familiar.

However, just wanted to say that there are a fair number of Toon events in Alverstoke, and Holy Trinity Gosport, on the IGI later end of 1700's

Expect you already knew that!

Good hunting

Hi Kevin,

A William Toon certainly leased some land in Alverstoke from the Winchester Bishopric estate - the two parts of the lease are at the record office in Winchester.

Harriet Ann Toon sold a property in Gosport (Bemister's Lane) in 1876.

Hi Nell,

Thanks for getting back to me.  This looks very hopeful.

Hi Mum44!! again!

Thanks for getting bavk so quickly.

Most of the family were baptised in Holy Trinity.

I'd really love to know where the family originates, it's such an unusual name.

Cheers
