Hi All,
I'm trying to find out more about my 3G grandfather, the wonderfully named Lemon Doe. He was born in Stowupland in around 1816. I'd be fascinated to find out more about the name Lemon and the Doe family.

Although it's way back it looks quite possible. There can't be that many Doe's in Stowmarket.

It might be worth contacting Neil LANGRIDGE. He runs the Stowmarket History and Hertitage site and he a veritable fountain of knowledge for the Stowmarket area. He also has Parish Records for Stowmarket, Stowupland and the surrounding area and he will do lookups.

Every time I find an ancestor I have to find 2more

Sir John Leman who died in 1632 is remembered today in the name of the high school in the town of Beccles. Also the museum in Beccles is located in Leman House.
He was a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, before being elected an Alderman of the City of London. He later became Lord Mayor of London.
He never married.
There may be a tenuous link (or a huge one 
between your Doe ancestors and Leman ancestors, certainly they were a family of wealth and position.
He had two brothers, Robert and William.

There is an article in the Ipswich Journal from Saturday, November 21st 1874, regarding a Lemon Doe from Melton.
I am assuming that this is the same family?
The article reads:-
"Assault - Lemon Doe, Melton, was charged with assaulting James Walters, at Melton, on 9th instant.
Complainant said he lived at Great Bealings, but was at Melton on the 9th, about a quarter-past 11 in the evening. He was at Mrs. Taylor's (who had that day been married), came out of the house, and Policeman Whythe was present trying to keep people quiet, there being a "rough band, " and amongst the latter was defendant. The "gang" was going by, when one, with a frail basket under his left arm, knocked witness down, and Whythe picked him up, bleeding from his ear. Was on the path at the front of the house at the time. He had not been out a minute, and had given no provocation.
Policeman Whythe said he was on duty at Melton from six o'clock in the evening till one the next morning. There was a great disturbance from the "rough band." Saw complainant come out of the house, with two or three others, about a quarter-past 11. Saw defendant pass complainant, going towards the Horse and Groom. Immediately he had passed complainant he saw his arm go up and complainant fall down. Was only three or four yards off. It was a starlight night. Defendant had a frail basket under his arm. It appeared to be an intentional blow. He picked complainant up, and found the blood running down from a cut behind the ear. Complainant was perfectly sober. Doe was the only one on the footpath.
Rebecca Fraser, widow, was at Taylor's, and saw Waters go out, and come in about three minutes after, bleeding. He was quite sober.
Defendant denied assaulting complainant, and said he did not know him. He called-
Henry Wells, who said that when complainant fell, Doe was some way up the street. He fell without being struck - would swear it. Doe had a frail basket. Whythe was from 12 to 14 yards off at the time. Booth came and said to Whythe, "That's Doe," and Whythe said, "It can't be Doe, for he has just come up from the other way."
Charles Knights said he was with Doe from about seven till about a quarter-past 11 and he did not strike anyone. He did not see Walters either struck or fall down." Did not see him at all.
Complainant (re-called) said that Mr. Booth was in the house at the time of the assault, and did not come out for 20 minutes after.
Witness Fraser corraborated this, as did Whythe, who said that Booth was in the house when he took complainant in. He did not say anything to Booth about Doe assaulting or not assaulting Walters, but told Booth afterwards that it was Doe, and said that he had also threatened to punch his (Booth's) head.
Fined 10s. 6d., and £1 1s, costs: in default 14 days.
The money was paid.

Thanks for the article - no suprise that there's antisocial tendencies in the family - haven't worked out where this Lemon Doe fits in yet, but must be related somewhere.
