Deptford Bottle Works
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 15:58 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone!

Several (well - many!) of my maternal family worked in the Deptford bottle works and  I'm hoping that there maybe more info on the Deptford Bottle Works online or in the archives?

thanks

Hi Jenny,

There are a few pictures of the old Deptford bottle works, but not much about it that I could find online, there was a bit more about the Seaham Harbour Bottle Works.

If you enter Sunderland Bottle Works in your search, you can see what I mean (entering Deptford gets you a different place entirely!)

Thanks Barbara,

I have only just narrowed it down to the Deptford one and did a search for Deptford but as you say, it comes up with Deptford London!

Look for 'Ayre's Quay Bottle Works'.  This was established about 1723, one of the proprietors, Mr. Wm. Barrass died on 23rd October 1790 and was buried at Gateshead.  The bottle works were operated by various owners and finally from c1869 to 1923 by Laing, Horn, Scott and Co.  In 1942 Sir James Laing built a new shipbuilding berth on the site.

There was also at Ayre's Quay, on the Ballast Hills, from 1802 the glassworks of R. Pemberton which seems to have operated until 1881, having other owners from 1853.

There is more information in "The Glass Industry of Tyne and Wear, Part 1: Glassmaking on Wearside" published by Tyne and Wear County Council Museums in 1979.

If you do a Google search for 'Ayre's Quay Bottle Works' one reference comes up on Rootsweb which has a link to a map showing the bottle works.

This map shows the Ayres Quay Bottle Works in 1851
http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/pip/singlezoom.asp?img=p2650&ref1=2415
Or you can go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
and put the post code SR4 6BY in the search box, this will centre the map on Ayres Quay and the Bottle Works are shown up to the 1938-1950 map.

Thanks

This is my mums side of the family, 3 generations worked in the bottle works around Bishop Wearmouth. I am only listing the direct lines but many of the sons and nephews also worked at one or other of the bottleworks.  And the ones that didn’t work in that industry were in the shipyards  Cheesy

Ggramdad Nicholas Walton  is down as a bottlemaker 1901 , 1891 has him as an apprentice bottlemaker
His granddad Nicholas Swinney was described as a glass man
Another ggrandfather Benjamin Graham came over from Londonderry and was described as a fireman in the glass house as was his son William….

So far, I haven’t found any descriptions that could link to plate glass manufacture.

Thanks for the links Stan, shall go and see what I can find... and thanks for the pic of the 1885 Ayres Quay bottleworks, I have saved it to file  Wink

If you go to http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/pip/singlezoom.asp?img=p2636&ref1=2029
there is a lithograph of Hartley's glass works next to the terrace houses of the factory workers, and at the bottom you can see the three chimneys of the Wear Flint Glass Works on the opposite side of Trimdon Street.

Thanks Stan,
I think I already have a copy of that particular lithograph... and yes they did live in the terraces around the works.  Most of the roads are no longer there now.  I just google mapped the postcode you gave earlier and it is so close to where they lived! I didn't realise that was the location of Ayres Quay bottle works. It makes alot of sense.

Hi Jenny.
I'm sorry I don't. You could try http://www.tyneandweararchives.org.uk/  or Durham County Record Office http://www.rootschat.com/links/032c/  or
