John Thomas Headland
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 21:53 GMT (UK) »

My Great grandfather John thomas Headland (sometime uses thomas as first name) lived with his mother and uncles in 1851. His mother was married to john Bradshaw and they lived alone in 1861. Can anyone help me find John Thomas Headland in the 1861 census?

Sorry forgot to say. Born 1844 in Bedfordshire. He sometimes used John and sometimes used Thomas so he may be under both.

Where, ie in which parish, did you find him in 1851?
Which was his parish of birth as shown in 1851? Presumably you have him in later censuses - was his parish of birth consistent?
Have you found him in 1871, if so where?
What was his mother's name?
Where was she living in 1861?

Help us to help you

There's a Thomas Hedland servant 16 ag lab born Odell living in Felmersham in the household of Chapman Marriott in 1861.

In any event I'm not convinced you have it right

If I have the right family in 1851 in Odell it was headed by John Headland, with his sister Mary 26, brother William 22 and sister in law Mary 24 plus nephews Thomas 6 and Samuel 3mths. (It doesn't help working out relationships that there's a Hannah 3mths daughter - of John presumably - inserted between William and Mary).

In 1861 William 31 and Mary 32 were in Odell with a son Samuel 10, in the same house as John the elder brother.

I think the Mary Headland who married John Bradshaw was the sister Mary age 26, in the 1851 census, as opposed to  the sister in law Mary age 24 mother of Thomas and Samuel. Or was Thomas the son of William and Mary? If Thomas is also out of order in 1851 then he could have been the son of the unmarried Mary

William and Mary don't appear to have married until 1850, which begs the question as to whether the Thomas aged 6 in 1851 was actually their son.

Hi There, Yes that was them. Thomas Was the illigitimate son of sister Mary. In 1851 Mary did live with her two brothers William and John and their families. One of the brothers was also married to a Mary. By 1861 Mary (Thomas mother was Married to John Bradshaw and they lived alone. Hence trying to find John Thomas her son.  John Thomas was born in the Bedfordshire workhouse so he is usually under Bedfordshire. However his family all came from O'Dell or Souldrop.
His mother Mary was born 1825 O'Dell, but she sometimes comes under Harrold?

Hope that helps? Think The Thomas you found as a servant may be right.

I don't think the 1851 enumerator could understand the relationships either as they're all out of order!

That's true. I got it from the county council and they sent a relashionship evaluator sheet with it so i could figure out who was who.
