who site would you say was the best for family history research, would it be ancestry or what ever advice greatly appreciated

Ancestry has the English, Welsh and Scottish censuses from 1841-1901

It also has the FULL GRO index from 1837-2005 as well as the partially transcribed index

There are lots of other things available but I am only listing the most commonly used - have a look around their website

An annual sub is about £70 (£1.30 a week) and I doubt you will get better value
