Fred Gleadle « on: Sunday 23 March 08 21:49 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone give me any information on Fred Gleadle, who I understand was Mayor of Sunderland at one time? Fred was born in 1895 or 6 in,Lincolnshire, either Scotter or Owston Ferry, son of Charles Gleadle and Mary King, I wondered what years he was Mayor, and if anyone had any idea how a boy from a humble background in Lincs came to be Mayor of Sunderland Thanks, Pat. .

Hi Pat
Fred Gleadle's birth was registered by the Gainsborough registrar in 1895, Apr to Jun quarter. Gainsborough registration district included both Scotter and Owston Ferry.
In the 1901 census Frederick Gleadle is recorded as 5 years old living in Silver St, Owston Ferry and born in Scotter. His father, Charles, was employed as a groom.
I cannot help with his political career in Sunderland but I hope that this post will provoke some more helpful reply.
Good luck
Gobbo

Hi Gobbo, It was Fred's time as mayor that I was particularly interested in, but thanks for getting back to me anyway. All the info I have about him being mayor is that he lived at 123 Wayman St. in Sunderland, and was married to someone called Evelyn! Cheers, Pat
