Hi
I am trying to trace the birth certificate for Sarah Neal and am having real difficulty deciding which one to order!
Sarah Emma who sometimes called herself Emma Sarah, was born between 1837 and 1839.
According to the 1841 census (she was Emma then) she was born in Surrey. 1851 (still Emma) has her born in 1838 in East Lane Surrey.
In 1861 she is missing but I did find a possible one for her working as a domestic, born Richmond 1838 and called Sarah.
From 1871 to 1901 She calls her self both Emma and Sarah and in each one she was born in 1839 in Camberwell.
However, none of the entries in the bmd really seem to be her. I did find one for 1839 in Kingston and I'm wondering whether this could be her. There is one for Sarah Jane Neal in Camberwell but this is not her.
Can anyone offer any help - I know I'm probably going to have to order a few before I find the right one but would just like some suggestions as to which one to try first!!

Do you know the name of the parents of the Emma you want?
If so, you could always send for a copy of the birth cert but put a condition on your application that you only want it if the parents were  ?. If it’s the wrong one – you will only be charged a search fee which I think is around £3
Alternatively - if the bmd index shows several possibilities the GRO offer reference checking online.
The charge is £7 for action on the first entry, which includes the cost of the certificate, and £3 for checking each subsequent reference against the information you have provided. You have the option of asking them to either stop at the first reference which agrees with your information or to check all references
You must give them one piece of information that you are sure will appear on the certificate for example, the exact date of the event or a parent(s) name(s). You must fill in the reference checking sheet which is accessed by pressing the reference checking button near the bottom of the page, and fill in all the fields that you would like the entry to be checked against before
you press the 'Submit' button. A certificate will only be issued if the entry they check matches the checking point you give them.

Do you have a marriage or death cert. for her?
If you have the former it will give you her father's name - a clue for the censuses.
If you have the latter, it should give you an age at death which will help with her birth date.
Are you aware of any siblings? Their births will give you their parents, and hers!

Thank you all for your replies.
Pauline - I don't think I really have a criteria for the 'right' one -I'm just trying to decide which one is the most likely considering her given year of birth in the census and that she gave her place of birth as Camberwell, East Lane etc.
I do know who her parents are - I have a copy of the marriage certificate which confirms her father's name and occupation and from this I have found them on the census records. It is just a constant source of frustration that I cannot trace her birth. Where possible I try to obtain as many certs as I can, even if I don't need to confirm parents etc.
Carole - I think you are probably right in suggesting the GROs reference checking and I will probably go along that route eventually.

You could be right about her birth not being registered - but I hope not. I haven't found her yet but still not giving up at the moment.
