Hi again,

The pointers people are sending about Richard Brown of the 11th hussars who was present at the Charge of the light Brigade are a great help. Please keep them coming as it is very exciting finding out about Richards life! (*)

My dad and dads cousin have suggested I put on some information about Richard Browns (Reg No: 1153 11th Hussars) family tree. I have been stuck researching Richards father William Brown (4xgreat grandad) for months and months and dont seem to be getting any where!! They suggeted some one may have a piece of information that might just help me locate him.
So here goes:
William Brown married Hannah Johnson 26 feb 1821 in Kirby Misperton Yorkshire.
They had 5 children christened in Kirby Misperton Yorkshire between 1823 and 1833. Elizabeth, RICHARD (01 June 1825)
Mary, Henry, John. They then moved to York where a further son Thomas was christened. (3XGreat Grandad.)
1841 Census HO 107/1354/6 shows The family in York. William Brown is 62 and born in Yorkshire.
1851 Census HO 107/2355 shows William Brown living at 41 Barker Hill, York aged 75 Born: Leeds Yorkshire.
Hannah Brown is 46 and Born: Westow Yorkshire.
William Brown does not appear in the 1861 Census!! RG 9/3552 Hannah is a 61 and a Widow. She has a visitor Sarah Ann Rex who is from Norfolk! (near the 11th Hussars Barracks from Richards 1851 Census (HO 107/1813) I do not know who this lady is!
In theory William is still alive on the 11th November 1858 as it does not say deseased on his sons Thomas's Marriage certificate. William is cited as a farmer. How ever I have had a search done at York Registry office between 1858 and 1861 and I they could not find his death!

If any one can help with locating  Williams birth or death I will be very very gratefull.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris

How exciting - William Brown is my ancestor too.

Afraid I have nothing further on William - you have obviously done more digging than me.  However I do have an photocopy of of a lengthy newspaper article of an interview with Richard telling of his experiences in the Crimea and which includes a drawing of him, and also a newspaper report of his death. Unfortunately the names of the newspapers are missing!

I will PM you to share info, but  I have to make 4 posts before I am allowed to send a PM, and this is my first.

Hi,

A big welcome to roots chat. this is a fantastic site as you will find out.
It is very exciting to find some one who is also related to william brown.
I have lots of info but still havent clinched the vital piece that will give me williams mother and fathers name. I am going to London for a few days today but will send u all I have when I get back.
Just a quick note is that i very recently have got information that William died in the workhouse in 1853. I have his York cemetary record.
I am  interested in that article you mention. Please send that. I have quite alot on Richard as well. Discharge papers, muster rolls etc may be hard to send as all A3 size!!

Will speak again soon.

Chris

PS how are you related to William? Williams son Thomas is my link!!
