Help - Campton/Shefford
« on: Monday 24 March 08 17:52 GMT (UK) »

Hello, I have just been looking into my father's side of Smith and have found that although we knew of a Lincolnshire connection it appears that my great great grandfather came from Bedfordshire what I would like to know is, is there a place called Cainton or would this have been Campton and is it near Shefford. On various census returns Cainton and Campton are mentioned as well as Shefford.

Hope that makes sense.

The parish was Campton, and although larger, Shefford was a part of Campton until it was created a civil parish in 1866

Are you sure Cainton isn't a mistranscription of Camton? "m" can easily be read as "in"

Google maps is always a good place to look
