William Burrows-By the 1841 census was living in St. Pancras London where he was born, on the census the surname is spelt Burrowes his wife's name is Racheal they are both aged 40. Rachael is down as being born in Scotland the eldest child listed is John 20 who is also down as being born in Scotland there are three younger children but they are down as being born in London. By the 1881 census John who is still living in London is aged 60 and birthplace is given as Ayrshire. Would anyone know a date of marriage for William and Rachael, if they got married in Scotland if there was any older children most important Rachael's maiden name and perhaps her parents name's. Buzz

Hi Buzz,
Have you applied for any of the younger children's birth certificates? One of them should give you Rachel's maiden name. There's no marriage between a William Burrows and Rachel in Scotland, but it may still allow you to find a birth for her. Plenty of Rachels born Ayrshire either side of 1801.
Also the 1841 census rounded down people's ages to the nearest five; have you found the family in 1851 to get a more exact date for their births?

Hi ev,
I'm just going by Buzz's previous thread on the London board. There's a reference there for a Frederick George James Burrows, born December 1841.

Thank you both for your reply's. I think I'll have to purchase Frederick's birth certificate. Just for the record in the 1851 census William changes his name to Fred and is 51 by the 1861 census he is back to William and is 61. In 1851 census Rachael is 53 and birthplace Scotland I think she died in the Dec 1/4 1859. Buzz

Hi Buzz,
I searched on the IGI using only first names of William and Rachel, marriage for the event, british isles, Scotland, Ayrshire. This is one that came up:
William BARROWS m Rachel MALCOM 09 oct 1818, West Kilbride, Ayrshire.

Hi again,
This looks like a Christeneing for Rachel.extracted entry from IGI:
Rachel MALCOM ch 20 Nov 1796 West Kilbride, Ayrshire p John MALCOM and Janet TYRE.
Also christened to these parents:
Mary MALCOM ch 13 Jan 1794 West Kilbride, Ayrshire.
Looking for a marriage for John MALCOM and Janet, this was the only likely looking one so thought maybe the marriage to Janet TYRE was a second marriage?
John MALCOM m Janet AITCHISON 1792 West kilbride, Ayrshire, but.......
Looked for a birth for Janet TYRE and found this one:
Janet AITCHISON TYRE ch 26 feb 1764 p William TYRE and Mary WOODSIDE.
so perhaps when the marriage record was transcribed they missed the TYRE off the end of her name.
Hope this is the right family.
Karen

Hello Karen

I did not think to change the spelling of William's surname.
All the best. Buzz
