Randal Churton Harries, Hamilton Ontario 1905
« on: Monday 24 March 08 18:30 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone help with information about Randal Churton Harries please.   Born in Liscard, Cheshire, England 18/06/1878, he was sent to Hamilton, Ontario in disgrace in 1905 - according to the family bible.   The bible also states that he joined the army (Canadian or British?) in 1916 and returned 1919.   Not sure where he returned to and there is no information after that.  Did he remain in Canada, or did he return to England?

His father William James Harries (b03/10/1847 Toxteth Park, Liverpool, England) went to visit him soon after and died in Hamilton 23/08/1906.   I believe he is buried in Hamilton cemetery.

Hi Joan,

Looks like Randal did serve in WWI with the Canadian Army.  He lists his sister as his next of kin.  He was living in Hamilton, Ontario at the time.

I'm trying to post the link, but Archives Canada site must be down???

Thanks Karen.

Randal had two sisters: Amy Buckley Harries and Dorothy Gibson Harries.   Amy was the eldest, so I presume she was the one he listed.

Couldn't find Randall in the 1922 Directory, but I did find an Henry Harries in Hamilton. Maybe this is who Randall was sent to stay with?

Hi Janice and ken67

This is fascinating, thankyou both so much.   I love the description of Randal on the back of the Attestation Paper.   It really brings him to life!   Interesting that he spells Randal with two L's, when it was only one originally.

Randal's father had a younger brother Henry Thomas Harries b1861 in Liverpool, England, but I haven't traced him yet.   Maybe he was the Henry that Randal stayed with and he had already gone to Canada , as you suggest Janice.   I haven't managed to see the Vernon's city directory yet, as one of their interal links is down at the moment.

I'm wondering if Randal is buried in the same cemetry as his father William James Harries who died in 1906.

Woodland (Alice and Harry) which are near each other close to the Royal Botannical Gardens and Dundurn Castle.
Grove Cemeatry is in Dundas (viola)

On the city of Hamilton site the Cemetaries are listed wiht an email and contact. If you cna get the plot numbers I'll be happy to get a photo for you. I'll be going there this summer.

Hi Janice and Kiddo

Thanks for all your information.   Janice, I have found William James Harries' grave!

Harries, William James
Temiskaming County,
Evantural,
Englehart Town Cemetery,
Ref: TMK-

Is it part of Hamilton?

Thanks for Randall's cemetery, but I can't seem to find a date of death, or whether he ever married.   He seems to just disappear until his grave appears!

I don't recognise any of the other Harries you found - not family names as far as I know, but maybe they were Randall's children??

Kiddo, thanks for the offer of the photo of Randall's grave.   That would be great when you next visit there.   As far as I know the ref. is: HM-331-2 at Woodland Cemetery.   Is that the plot no. do you think?

Joan..there is an "Ethel" Harries also buried in the Temiskaming Cemetary?? Name ring a bell?? Temiskaming is Northern Ontario..not even close to Hamilton. More to look for I think.. better get on it!!

More...not so sure that Temiskaming is the right one..sorry..the distance to burial is maybe 1000 km?? On the death cert there is abig stamp over the name so I searched Harris as well . It was also only noted as "W. J." There are several possibilities in Woodland and Hamilton Cemetaries. One in Hamilton Cem which is W.J. Harris. I have made notes and will have alook when I can.

Harries is not so uncommon after all!! Smiley

Hi Kiddo

Thankyou for all that!

I agree, Temiskaming Cemetary does sound very unlikely, especially as William James Harries was only on a visit to Hamilton to see Randal.   I did find Evantural on a virtual map, but couldn't link it to Hamilton.   Now I know why!   Grin Grin

I think the W.J.'s in the Woodland and Hamilton Cemetaries sound much more plausible.   Harries was sometimes miss spelt as Harris, but odd on a gravestone.   I'm not sure how the visit to Randal went (the latter having being sent to Canada in disgrace), but you would expect that Randal might have wanted to be buried in the same cemetary as his father -Woodland. Huh

Joan..there is an "Ethel" Harries also buried in the Temiskaming Cemetary?? Name ring a bell?? Temiskaming is Northern Ontario..not even close to Hamilton. More to look for I think.. better get on it!!
KIddo

I haven't come across any Ethels so far, so she is probably not linked to my William James.  Thanks for the thought tho'.

The hunt goes on! Smiley

Woodland and Hamilton Cemetaries are across the street from each other, so no big distance. We'll see what turns up.
