STANNETT Surname Origins
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 21:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I'm descended from the Stannett family that can be traced back to the mid 1600s in Wooburn, Bucks however finding anything else out has left me stumped.
I read somewhere that the Stannett surname originated from Suffolk and I wondered if anyone else had any information about this name or the Suffolk branch.  I have a strong suspicion that the family moved into Bucks but from where I do not know.

Many thanks

Steph

Hi Steph

There are no STANNETT/variants listed on the Suffolk Hearth Tax Return of 1674.

The return lists all heads of household in the county at this date.  I would have though that it would be very unusual for an entire extended family to leave a county completely, so perhaps the family does not have Suffolk origins? Undecided

Hi there Grin

A name variant for Stannett is STANNARD which is a name I have come across frequently in my research in Suffolk and other counties.

Good luck  Smiley

Many thanks for the Stannard suggestion, I have come across it before.  My main reason for posting in this area was that I saw a website which dealt in surname origins and which said that the earliest recorded mention of the surname in its Stannett form was in ancient manorial rolls.  From my experience of the dates of these sorts of rolls this would probably put them back to 12-14th centur, allowing a few hundred years to drift across to Berks/Bucks!
I've learnt that any lead is worth trying when you've hit a dead end.
