St Pauls, Sculcoates - Parish Registers - CRABTREE and DICK
« on: Monday 24 March 08 20:45 GMT (UK) »

Hello

I have fourth great grandparents - Elizabeth CRABTREE and John DICK - who, according to the IGI, married 30 March 1850 at St Pauls in Sculcoates.
However, they were born about 1800 and had a child around 1828 named John Guthrie DICK (spelt on IGI as "Guttery"). Somehow, their supposed marriage in 1850 doesn't quite seem right...
Is anyone out there able to please look up the Parish Registers at St Pauls for me?

Many thanks
Rachel, New Zealand.

Hi Rachel,

On the IGI is a marriage of a David Guthrie Dick to a Sarah Crabtree at Sutton-in-Holderness on 19 September 1826 - possible uncle, maybe 2 brothers married 2 sisters?

Because of this, it may be worth asking someone if they could check the Sutton-in-Holderness records as well.

A Henry Guthrie Dick died in the Myton District aged 11, which is on the YorkshireBMD site, so there could also be a connection there.

I don't know if this will help or not.

Hi Gill
this certainly is very interesting! For sure they'd have to be connected to my John Guthrie Dick, because there can't be many " _ Guthrie Dick"s around.
Where is Sutton-in-Holderness is relation to Hull?

Many thanks Smiley

Don't give up!

I found my great grandparents marriage in Hull in 1892 after they already had 4 children. I found them on the census's and she was down as his wife but it was only by chance that I found their marriage.

By the way, Sutton in Holderness is on the east side of Hull, where as St Paul's is almost central.

Good luck.

I checked out the 1850 marriage at the Record Office this morning.

It's a lesson in not trusting those IGIs submitted by LDS members as the bride's name is completely wrong!  Roll Eyes

Here are the details:

St Paul's, Sculcoates 30 March 1850  Banns
John Dick, 22, bach, labourer of Worsley Street & Elizabeth Batty, 23, spin of Worsley St d/o Abraham Batty, bricklayer.

Witnesses: William Wood, Ann X Batty.

It doesn't give any info about John's father.

On looking at the Yorkshire BMD site, they actually have the correct details that Jill found, but of course Jill got details of the witnesses etc. which helps greatly.

A couple of things I found that may or may not be of interest to you as they contain the name of Guthrie:

The Hull Packet (Hull, England), Friday, April 17, 1840
Death
On the 10th inst. After a short illness, aged 73, Elizabeth, relict of Capt. John Guthrie Dick, of this place.

The Hull Packet and East Riding Times (Hull, England), Friday, November 16, 1855
Marriage
November 13, at Stainton-le-Vale, near Market Rason, Lincolnshire, by the Rev. Lloyd Jones,  Charles Ollivious McAllum Esq., of Newcastle, to Emma Guthrie Dick, niece of the late W. Beadle, Esq., of this place.

Hi There and thanks so much for the information about John Dick and Elizabeth Batty's marriage!
Because you were able to give me the father of Elizabeth (Abraham), I was able to find out all her siblings, all of Abraham's siblings and Abraham's parents from the IGI (treated with caution, of course!)  Grin
Once I've finished I'll work on what Gillywilly gave (the Guthrie Dick information).

Thanks so much for all of your help
