My two G, and GG Fathers were Pit blacksmiths base from Houghton Le Spring.
I understand that one of them mad a very handsome pair of wrought iron gates for a grand Estate fairly local to Houghton.
The problem is I don't know where. My Father thinks it could be Langley Park?
But with you wealth of local knowledge, can any of you help, or suggest to me where there might be any grand wrought iron gates to an Estate ( if there are any that still remain?)
Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi CopperBeech
The Rectory in Houghton Le Spring certainly had a fine set of wrought iron gates and the house and grounds are also quite lavish for a little rectory!
Search Wiki***** and follow Reference no 3 History of the town & then photos; records may interest you as well if you have surnames to look up. Do you have approx. dates of when these gates were made?
May not be them - but certainly nice gates!
Su
Modified: If, as your Dad thinks, it is Langley Park, then how about approaching them to see if they have records?

I think this is one and the same - apologies if incorrect! (Not exactly my neck of the woods either!)

Good Luck
Su
There is a council report on the net somewhere - try doing a search on George Green Gates - they were described as ornate wrought iron.

Thanks for the information Su, but from what I can make out those gates are in Buckinghamshire, so sadly no good!
Thanks anyway.

I have a town called Langley Park in Durham seems to be about 8 -10 miles away from Houghton Le Spring.
Any better? Again if you can throw some dates in it may be easier to find what grand estates were around at that time.
Su
http://www.eshparishcouncil.gov.uk/ If we are in a better location, then there are some great photos on here and several large schools/colleges who could be candidates for gates?

A blacksmith working at Houghton le Spring may possibly have been working at one of the local collieries. The nearest ones were owned by the Lambtons and the Londonderries.
Regarding estates close to Houghton le Spring, Lambton Park is quite close and there are entrances with gates, Lumley Park is also a possibility as is Morton House at Fence Houses.
Wearsider.

Hi Su,
I think the time span for these gates would have been a period covering 1856 - 1910.
Thanks again!
Thanks Wearsider, a good selection there to start with!

Hi Copperbeech
Came across this list of listed buidlings and structure within the area concerned - would it be worth contacting the authority to see if they hold photographs of gates?
http://www.chester-le-street.gov.uk/media/pdf/r/8/listedbuilding.pdf
Certainly a few possibles here!
Su
Mod: Was the gate contract a private one with your rellies? Are there any business accounts still kicking around?
