Hugh CHISHOLM Scotland to Nova Scotia
« on: Tuesday 25 March 08 09:10 GMT (UK) »

Based on Canadian censuses and death record I have determined my 3rd grt gpa was born ca 1802 in Scotland.  Unfortunately I find 2 people of this name in IGI born to same parents (William Chisholm and Mary McTavish) within 2 years of each other in Inverness (1802 and 1804).

When a couple has 2 children with same name it usually means that the first child died...

I have possible data from 1838 NS census; definite from 1851, and since he died in 1867 there is no possibility of finding him in 1871.  I don't think 1861 Nova Scotia is available for Pictou County.

In 1881 his wife Catherine (nee unknown) is living with one son's family and is 72 yrs old.  It says she was b. Nova Scotia, but this could be wrong.  If it is there is a slight possibility she and Hugh married in Scotland.

I guess my only hope is to either find when he left Scotland for Canada, or connect with someone else in this family.

Other ideas?

Thanks,

Nick

Hello Nick,

The IGI shows only 9 Hugh Chisholms marrying in Scotland between 1810 and 1850.

Only 2 marry a Catherine/Catharine

1.  'All submmitted',  Hugh Chisholm m. 18 Nov 1842 Catherine McIntosh
Children:
Alexander b.  01 Oct 1843 ch 12 Nov Urquhart, Inverness
Finlay ch. 29 Jul 1846, Urquhart, Inverness
Marjory ch.  20 Oct 1848, Urquhart, Inverness

2.  'Extracted'  Hugh Chisholm m.  16 Feb 1847, Cromarty, Ross and Cromarty

Only one female child on the IGI

Ann b. 21 Oct 1855 Rosemarkie, Ross and Cromarty.

Am afraid that's the limit of my help  :O(

Thanks Piglet.

Here is the 1851 Egerton, Pictou, Nova Scotia census that I am pretty sure is him (with my notes):

Head of Family: Hugh Chisholm     (Total of 7 kids from 0 to 20 yrs old)
Males under 10 yrs: 2                                                      (1841-1850)
Females under 10 yrs: 2   <--- one could be Isabella             (1841-1850)
Males 10-20 yrs: 2      <--- one could be Hugh, Jr below       (1831-1840)
Females 10-20 yrs: 1
Females 20-30 yrs:
Males 30-40 yrs:
Females 30-40 yrs: 1  <--- Catherine b 1810-1820
Males 40-50 yrs: 1     <--- Hugh  b 1800-1810

After posting last night I went thru all NS marriages online at novascotiagenealogy, and found some other possibilities for children's names.  One possible dau was "Catherine Fraser Chisholm" so that might indicate mother's maiden name.

I will pursue that and known children of Hugh, Jr who appears to have been b. NS in 1838 (Isabella was my 2x grt gma).

Hello Nick,
Have a look at the Chisholm Genealogy forum here:
http://www.clansman.info/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl
We are currently discussing a couple of NS Chisholm families amongst others and have the backing of the Clan Chisholm Society as well as the pooled resources of a group of genealogists with "Chisholm" interests.
If you post your query there then something might come up.
Having said that, the links back to Scotland for emigrants of that period are often extremely hard to prove - so good luck!
I'll have a look through my own notes to if tere might be some clues there.
