Hi Ady,

the only likely marriage for Moses Lowe between 1881 and 1891 shown on FreeBMD freebmd.rootsweb.com is this one indeed:
Sep 1882 Wakefield 9c 32
Moses Lowe to either Fanny Lumb or Elizabeth Plant

Hi
My ggrandad was John Lowe ,Moses Brother both miners from Staffs that moved to Castleford area in late 1800s
John was living in Normanton in 1918.
I seem to have lost touch with that side of family.
My grandad was Clifford Lowe son of John and Caroline.

Great to get in touch Smiley

Moses and Elizabeth died long before I was born, their daughter Elizabeth was my father`s mother, she came to Elland in service to a millowner`s family where she met and married my grandad. They were married at Altofts Church on 1st Jan 1910 my dad was born 13th June that year.

As far as I can make out they had four children two boys and two girls. Aaron the eldest never married, not surprising as my dad told me Aaron`s attitude to women was that `they needed their eyes blacking twice a fortnight` The other boy Joseph was engaged to be married but drowned in the canal near Altofts after a boozy do, I have the Coroner`s Inquest report. They had a girl Ruth who I never knew about until a couple of years ago and of course my gran.

Do you know of the Wakefield Family History Sharing website. It had the Altofts School records on it for the late 1800`s and early 1900`s, it explained why my gran was illiterate, she was the only one of Moses` four kids who didn`t go to school.

Joseph Lowe was born at Altofts circa 1893, he accidentallyu drowned in the canal near Altofts on 26th November, 1916, he was living at 3, Albert Terrace, Altofts. I have his death certificate and Coroner`s report somewhere but can`t find them at the moment. I remember his occupation was shown as some sort of coal mine work, no suggestion of his being involved in  WW1.

I don't suppose he's any relation to Jonah Lowe who was living at 32 Albert Terrace in 1891 is he?

Hi JonS

I`m afraid I can`t help you re Jonah though it would be no surprise if they were related, it seems a lot of families from Staffordshire came up to Altofts and Normanton en bloc no doubt in search of mine work. I never actually met any Lowes on my visits to Altofts, all the rellies I met were called Plant which was the maiden name of my G Gran.

Regards,
