Help! Baptism 1773?
« on: Tuesday 25 March 08 10:37 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

Can anyone help me locate the baptism of Joseph Bailey.. probably Dawley, Shrops.  1773. He married a Jane Guy (b1777, not having much luck with her baptism either) in 1798. There are a few baptism of children around this time but i can't be sure which belong to which as there is another Joseph and Jane whom married Dawley 1793!

Thanks in advance!

Hi, the marriage and subsequent birth of Jospeh Bailey on IGI is submitted therefore needs to be checked out at the local RO however in the situ that you have i would fristly attribute the births of any children to Jospeh / Jane Bailey to prior to 1798 to the couple that married in 1793
are you sure that the couple marrying in 1793 are not yours?

I have the marriage for my Joseph to a Jane Guy and this Jane in 93 has a different surname so i am quite sure she is not mine. Joseph appears to be a family name amongst others so as Dawley has a large population of Bailey's it is likely there are several Josephs!

okay failing finding Joseph Baileys bapt. have you got them in the 1841 census with any children ( a long shot ) you can then obviously attach those children to your Jospeh & Jane, and any childre prior to their marriage to the other joseph and jane - not foolproof but something to go on.

They both died before the 1841 sadly! I guess it would have to be an ro look up!
Thanks for your help.

Hi again
consulting my book re parish regsiters baptisims

when there were several sets of parents in a parish with identical names, whose childbearing periods exactly coincides and who gave their chidren the same baptismal names, you will havea problem
this often happened in rural areas where there were relatively few surnames.
sometimes the registers distinguished the fatehrs as senior, junior elder younger or connected them with their townshio, farmstead house name or occupation. a search of the burial registers and the contents of wills may eliminate a few. parental detah could be indicated whent he adjective was dropped but it was not always the older person who died first, any posthumous offspring should be described as such. another explanation might be that one family had gone elsewhere or had stopped having children
look for the incidence of forename patterns over successive generations or within the wider family circle in the past people seem to have drawn on a fairly limited pool of baptisimal names. sometimes the first son was named afetr the father the second after the paternal grandfather the third afetr the maternal grandfather and so on a younger child might bear the baptisimal name of one who had died befoer he or she was born or severla living siblings might be givent he same forename to preserve the family inheritance of property which under an existing deed was to descend ina predtermined way to individuals of a certian name. when fathers occupations were recorded look for the continuity if you need to separate famlies with matching names. this isnt foolproof as some work was seasonal and lots of people earned a living in the countryside as labourers or were engaged in the same local trades. the eldest son was the most likely to follow his fathers trade while his younger brothers might be forced to move elsewhere for employment
