I need help!
My great-great grandfather was Thomas D. Morris--I believe his middle name was Daniel, as he stated that it was in his Civil War pension application.
He immigrated to America circa 1850 and lived in Wisconsin, among other places. He fought in the Civil War. In his Civil War pension application file, he states that he was born in Shropshire, although his "people" were Welsh.
In his pension file papers was a copy of a page from his mother's bible which he states he got from his brother John--it was needed to prove his date of birth when he applied for a Civil War pension. His mother's name is unknown, however the bible page lists Thomas D. Morris and his siblings, and their birth years, as follows (this is how they are written on the bible page):
John B. Morris, born 1829 Isac, born 1837 William, born 1833 Father died Nov 14, 1839 Thomas, born Dec 15 1839
Thomas also stated in his pension file, that he had two sisters who also immigrated to Wisconsin, and died there. So there were two sisters not written in his mother's bible. He also stated that his father's name was John.
His brother John B. Morris was born in Wales and was married to a woman named Rosa, who was born in England. I don't know if they married in the UK or if they met and married in Wisconisn. I already know where Thomas and John lived after they came to the US, I have several census records for them.
But my interest is in where the family lived in Shropshire and when they moved there from Wales. I cannot find them on any records in the UK and I have searched. Even if all the siblings were born in Wales (his parents were definitely born in Wales), why can't I find a record of them in Shropshire? If Thomas was born there in 1839, why isn't the family listed in the 1841 UK census records? I wonder if by the time Thomas was interviewed for his pension application, his memory was perhaps faulty re where he was born.
On many of the USA census records for Thomas and his brother John, they state their parents were born in Wales, also John B. I suspect all the siblings were born in Wales and had moved to Shropshire by the time Thomas was born. Thomas sometimes went by "T. Dunn Morris" so I also wonder if perhaps his mother's maiden name was Dunn?
Is there anyone who can find this family in Wales or in Shropshire? I would greatly appreciate any help or advise re this matter!
