This man was quite different from your average run of lower class thieves etc.  Apart from being knighted (and Irish), he was a world-beater in getting into trouble and not learning from his mistakes, all at an age when he should have known better!!  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

He built Vaucluse House in Sydney (later owned and greatly expanded by William Charles Wentworth).  Given all the trouble he kept getting into, I'm not sure how much time he had to actually live in it!  Roll Eyes

If you'd like to know about him, Google - there's an article about him in the Dictionary of Australian Biography online, and I think one in Wikipedia.

I found him because my French class were wondering why the French  placename Vaucluse for this Sydney landmark and suburb.  After we found why he named his house Vaucluse, I investigated further and found this fascinating man!

I'd love to know if he continued getting into trouble when he finally returned to Ireland - or did he just quietly retire in County Cork??  Huh Huh  Grin

PS  It would be fascinating if we had a Rootschatter who's descended from him!
