At least two Williams born around same time by IGI. 1841 is fine for Children Deb. It is only adults ages which were rounded down. I find children's ages likely to be most accurate the nearer to their birth we can get, therefore I would give 1841 the most credence in this case. I haven't looked yet, but would think Stephen may be the easiest to spot (less common than William and Thomas)..........Kris  Cheesy

There were two Stephens born in Truro around the right time also would you believe

Stephen ROBERTS Sep 1/4 1839 Truro 9 264

Stephen HARVEY ROBERTS Mar 1/4 1840 9 341

GRO lists death as Stephen Harvey ROBARTS Sep 1841 Truro 9 174

Burial Stephen Harry ROBERTS. 19 Sep 1841 aged 2 St Allen, Res is Just St Allen

In 1841 census Stephen is described most presicely as 17 months of age.

There was a burial for a Mary Roberts in 1846 aged 43 res listed as Lane. Full baptism entries for the boys may list a residence which just may help ascertain if this is likely the correct Mary

There is another Stephen in St Agnes which may be the second one. 1851 aged 12 son of Stephen and Mary - 1841 Mary is alone with young Stephen, suggesting he is only 1  Undecided ) If Stephen Harvey Roberts is yours perhaps his name is a clue.............Kris  Cheesy

Just read all your messages, very interesting. i think the best thing to do is send off for Stephens birth certificate and go from there. I'll send off today(i'll start with the sep 1/4 1839)  and let you know how i get on.

Looking at your message about the death of Mary i've checked all the Death registrations for Mary Roberts in truro between the 1841 & 1851 census and there is a Mary Ann whose death was registered in the Sept 1/4 of 1842 Ref 9/201. As this is about the time of the birth of William & Marys last child Thomas I was wandereing if maybe Mary could have died in childbirth. I might send for the death cert to see if it is my Mary and see what it says.

Hi Julie,

Yes I saw that Mary Ann in 1842 but as burial wasn't listed in St Allen I wasn't convinced. As you say time frame is right for a possible childbirth related death but if that happened she was not buried in St Allen and one would expect she should have been. Oh so many deaths of Mary Roberts in Truro, Mary buried St Allen 1846 aged 43 - for age seemed good and she was buried in St Allen, but of course without the certs we can't really know. Same with Stephen, I lean towards it being Stephen Harvey as we know he was buried in St Allen and your Stephen does not appear in 1851. Age of 17 months in 1841 looks horribly close also. The other Stephen appears in St Agnes. Hope I am wrong since you have ordered the 1839 one first.

I think I saw a third Stephen also born in Truro (circa 1850 something) ...so one of these families had to have had a Stephen die and a new Stephen born .

there is also the eldest son William b c 1837/8

this could be his reg

I see what you mean about Stephens birth & Marys death. I'll see what the certificates i have sent for say and will send for the others if theyare incorrect. I'll keep my fingers crossed but could i be lucky enough to get it right first go!!!(probably not).

Just to let you know that i received Stephens birth cert today ( Sept 1/4 1839) and itisn't my stephen. This one is the son of Stephen & Mary Roberts from St Agnes. So will send for Stephen Harvey Roberts Certificate now.

Hi Kris
Have received birth cert for Stephen Harvey Roberts at last. Still not sure if right person. Mothers maiden name was Harvey. Would it be possible for you to check the parish records to see if a William Roberts married a Mary Harvey. The 1st child William was baptised 30 Jul 1837 so marriage may have taken place around the beginning of 1837 or maybe end of 1836. 
The birth date for Stephen on the cert is 8th Jan 1840. If he was the one buried at St Allen 19th Sept 1841 he wouldn't have been 2 until Jan 1842 and he's listed as age 2 when he was buried. Would they have rounded the age up to the nearest year?

Hi Julie,

Glad you finally got your certificate. I do think the burial is for the same child. Census age fits perfectly. What is written in the register is dependeant on what he was told and what he chose to write down. 20 1/2 months, simply two would be a lot easier to put down. Of course you would need to view the register yourself. I expect the "Harry" has been incorrectly transcribed. I note myself Harry and Harvy in registers can be very hard to tell at times. I think the name is so similar it is him.  Alas I am sorry I have not been able to locate a marriage. Unfortunately we don't know where Mary was from - the marriage may have taken place in her home parish, maybe even over the border. There is a chance if William was from St Allen Banns may have been read there but I am sorry I am unable to check those for you............Kris  Cheesy
