Westminster St James
« on: Tuesday 25 March 08 23:48 UTC (UK) »

Hello Dawn,

My great grandfather, William Lee (Lea) MATTHEWS was born 18 Aug 1823 and Batised 25 October 1824 St James Westminster with parents Benjamin Matthews and Rachel Viccars (Viccers, Vickers).

I have a copy of the baptism entry for William but I can't read his parent's address or his father's occupation (the copy is really dark and smudged), I would like to identify at least his dad's occupation to help with further research.

I have also been trying to locate any siblings for William, born between 1820 and 1831 in St James Westminster with parents Benjamin and Rachel. There is a Benjamin Matthews born 1820 St James Westminster who I suspect may be a brother, but I can't find out anything else about him.

Dawn, I know that you are giving priority to those who have posted some time ago, and I don't expect that you will have time for this request, just posting just in case.

Best wishes,

Margaret Smiley

Hi Margaret

I'm hoping to go to Westminster City Archives where St James records are before I go to the LMA.

I'll add you to my list.

Dawn

This is an update regarding finding the siblings of William Lee (Lea) Matthews, with parents, Benjamin Matthews and Rachel Viccars (Viccers, Vickers) - I have made some progress.

I have found a Mary Ann MATTHEWS, unmarried, born 1826, with mother Rachel who I think may be William’s sister and Thomas Matthews b 1815 and Benjamin Matthews b 1807 (all  born St James Westminster London), who may be his half brothers.

1841 census – Mary Ann Matthews b1826 nbic is visiting Thomas Matthews b 1815 nbic, at High Street, Burford, Witney Oxfordshire.  In 1851 (census), Thomas Matthews b St James London, is living in Burford Oxfordshire with wife, Louisa and family.

1851 census – Mary Ann Matthews unmar b 1826 St James Westminster and Rachel Matthews Wid b1786 Rockingham Rutland are visiting High Street Burford Witney Oxfordshire, the home of Benjamin Matthews b 1807 St James Westminster London,

1861 census - Mary Ann Matthews b1826 London is living with her mother Rachel Matthews Head b 1789 Rockingham Northamptonshire. They are living at Elton, Huntingtonshire.

1871 and 1881 censuses – Mary Ann Matthews is living with her cousin, Edward Peach b 1817, Elton, Huntingdonshire, in Oundle, Northamptonshire.

It is possible that Benjamin Matthews was a widower when he married Rachel Viccars in 1819 at St George, Bloomsbury London aged 41 years, although, it is difficult to be certain as this information isn’t recorded on the copy of their parish marriage by banns entry. I have been unable to find a marriage for Benjamin and Sarah, but there is a Thomas Matthews, born 18 November, 1815 and Baptised 20 October 1824 St James Westminster London, IGI extracted record, with parents Benjamin Matthews and Sarah, who I suspect is the Thomas M Matthews whom Mary Ann was visiting in 1841. His baptism record from St James Westminster should, hopefully, have his father’s occupation and address recorded, which, if he is indeed William’s half brother, should correspond with that which is recorded on William’s baptism entry because Thomas, even though born in 1815, was baptised 20 October 1824, just five days before William.

Therefore, I suspect that Benjamin born c1807, St James Westminster, whom Mary Ann and Rachel were visiting in 1851 is Thomas’s brother and therefore, Mary Ann and possibly William’s half brother, however, as is the case with Mary Ann, I can’t find a baptism on IGI or Pallot’s Baptism Index 1780-1837, for him to confirm this.

All the best,

Margaret Smiley

Hi Margaret

The death registration for Thomas Matthews in Witney district shows his middle name to be Moss

Deaths Mar 1873
Matthews  Thomas Moss  57  Witney  3a 474

His marriage would give you details of his father

Marriages Jun 1845
Matthews  Thomas Moss    Witney  16 205
Radburn  Louisa     Witney  16 205

Matthews is quite a common surname so it would be possible to have more than one Rachel Matthews in the St James Westminster area. Thomas' marriage would at least confirm whether his father was in fact named Benjamin.

Someone does have a tree which includes Benjamin Matthews of Burford (no parents named). His name is given as Benjamin George Oliver Matthews married Rebecca Marriott 1st May 1827 Witney Oxfordshire.

Most of Pallots baptism index was destroyed by enemy action during the Second World War so unlike the marriage index which has survived intact what remains of the baptism index much much smaller.

Valda, thank you for your time spent finding this information, I do appreciate it.

I have verified the marriage details for Benjamin Matthews and Rebecca Marriott, for future reference, if needed – I found their marriage by licence (marriage year only) in the Oxfordshire Archdeacon’s Marriage Bond Index - 1634 - 1849 from RootsChat Oxfordshire Board.

I have ordered Rachel Matthews death certificate – FreeBmd, Dec qtr, 1862 Oundle – she was living in that registration district in 1861 and I can’t find her in 1871 or later censuses, so I am sure that it is she. This will hopefully have her husband’s name recorded and may even have her maiden name, so will be valuable in linking the families. Also, I have ordered the marriage certificate for Thomas and Louisa, which should confirm Thomas’s father’s name and occupation and the witnesses names could also be revealing.

The definitive link to William Lea Matthews, and therefore to his parents, Benjamin Matthews and Rachel Viccars, would be to find Thomas’s father’s occupation and address at the time of his baptism on 20 October 1824 St James Westminster London.

I can’t wait for the certificates to arrive – one way or another it will at least prove or disprove my hunch.

Thank you again Valda,

Hi Margaret

This webpage tells you what you will find on an English death certificate.

http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm

It should give Rachel's husband's name but not her maiden name.

On the 1861 census Rachel gave her birthplace as Rockingham Northamptonshire. Unusually for Northamptonshire which has very poor coverage on the IGI, Rockingham's baptism registers are covered between 1722-1812.

RACHELL VICKARY
Christening:  13 JUN 1784   Rockingham, Northampton

Oh Valda, tears of joy are flowing at this moment. For so long my great, great grandmother, Rachel, has just been a name to me. Wow, this is amazing – thank you so much for finding her baptism/parents, some of her family and a new county or two to explore - I’m still trying to take it all in.

You’ve found the link to Rachel through the baptism entries for Mary Ann’s Peach cousins. This is wonderful. I noticed that Rachel’s sister, Mary Vickers (married to John Peach) died aged 50 in 1834. Rachel and she were probably very close in age.

Then there is Jane, married to John Frier who is almost certainly another sister, hopefully, she lived long enough to appear on some censuses……and that also means that my great grandfather, William had a sister, Mary Ann, and cousins Thomas, Marianne and Edward.

Finally, there is baby John, born to Rachel, who died so young…. how sad.

The name Viccars et al, certainly has many variations. Rachel could not write - she signed her marriage register with her mark. The witnesses to her marriage to Benjamin in 1819 were James Viccars, who signed his name and James Taylor. Benjamin died in 1835, there is an MI for him in Charterhouse Chapel burials……. Benjamin Matthews, husband of Rachel Matthews, a housemaid to the Charterhouse, 58 years. In 1841 census, Rachel was enumerated as a retired house servant, living in Charterhouse, East London nbic. Maybe that was why 15 year old Mary Ann was living with Thomas in 1841. On William’s baptism entry, Benjamin’s occupation was housekeeper so it all ties in. Up until a few days ago this was all I knew about Benjamin and Rachel and now........

Thank you so much Valda, this is just perfect.

Hugs,
Margaret  Cheesy
