Wardington Hall inquiry
« on: Wednesday 03 June 09 07:04 UTC (UK) »

Good Morning to the Oxfordshire Forum.

I would like to make an inquiry about Wardington Hall and am finding it difficult to pinpoint the postal address.  I wondered if anyone from the forum is in or near the village of Wardington.

Yours J.A. (Northumberland Forum)

Hi JA ...

I'm not that far from Wardington (about 20 mins. in the car!).  If you look at the village on Multimap (use the Ordnance Survey option at max. magnification) you will see that there's "Wardington House" and "Manor House" (the latter shown in "olde worlde" writing!).

Can you narrow it down any more using censuses etc.?

Further to previous posting (and after a little Googling), Wardington House seems to have been at some point (and may still be) a residential/nursing home for the elderly.  You can see a couple of photos of it (taken in the early 1900s) on English Heritage's Viewfinder website.

Wardington Manor is situated in Upper Wardington (to the SE of the main road).  I now remember that I've visited their lovely gardens several times!  In 2004 much of the house was damaged by a serious fire and I don't think the gardens have been open since.

A directory entry that I found (undated) gives the occupant of Wardington House as a Mrs. Douglas Campbell.

Hi Pennie.

Thank you for the reply.

It's the Manor not the Hall I need the postcode for - it's making sense now - Doh! - I wondered why the place had turned into a nursing home  (my observations were the same as yours).

Hi,

The post code for Wardington Manor is = OX17 1SW

Yes, it was badly affected by a fire a couple of years ago.

I can't be certain but I don't think the gardens are open any more.

Regards

Hi

Thank you Foz - once I realised it was the Manor and not the Hall the postcode came with the site address.

I don't know if this is of any use to you but Wardington House was used as a school during WW11.     The school came from London and was called Ealing College.  I understand the owner at the time was a Miss Fraser and the vicar of the local church was the Rev.Fox.     The farmer whose property adjoined the stabling yard at Wardington House was called Mr. Hale.

Hello Roothayo

It was the Manor's postcode which I was looking for.  I contacted the person I needed to by letter but they have not replied.

Thank you for your efforts anyway.
